Fengxian Flower Drum is a folk art project in the second batch of representative projects of Xuzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. Fengxian Flower Drum, also known as "two-person drum", "beating flower drum", "dingxiang flower drum", "flower drum small gong", "smashing dry bang", etc., has a history of more than 400 years in Fengxian, and the history of master-apprentice inheritance is also nearly 200 years. Generations of Flower Drum artists have continuously absorbed the advantages of Fengxian Bangzi, Fengxian Zhuizi, Luoyang Quzi and other operas during the performance, forming Fengxian Flower Drum with rich content, beautiful singing and movements. Fengxian Flower Drum was relatively popular in the border areas of Jiangsu, Shandong, Henan and Anhui provinces in the early years. Now there are only occasional artists in Sunlou Town, Songlou Town, Fengcheng Town, Wanggou Town, Shizhai Town, etc. Fengxian Flower Drum has different performance forms, namely three art categories: opera, folk art and dance. When one person (or two people) sits and sings, with narration as the main body, and the dance and performance are both secondary, it can be regarded as folk art; when there is dance but no song (or less song), with dance, group dance, tumbling dance, and martial arts as the main body, and only gongs and drums as accompaniment, it can be regarded as folk dance; and when there are characters and stories, with singing and performance as the main body, and it enters the stage of interpreting stories with characters, it becomes opera. The music of Fengxian Flower Drum consists of two parts: singing and accompaniment. Commonly used music tunes include [Pingdiao], [Handiao], [Huolangdiao], [Kudiao], etc. The basic movements of Fengxian Flower Drum include "stomping lotus steps", "catching butterflies", "picking cotton", "kicking belts", "carrying burdens", "catching tigers with both legs", "carp spine", and "embroidering cotton". Special skills include "Jade Dragon Coiled Pillar", "Heavenly Girl Descending to Earth", "Black Tornado", "Immortal Pointing the Way", etc. Fengxian Huagu Opera generally has five-character sentences, seven-character sentences, ten-character sentences, and also "three-character sentences" and "four-character sentences". The sentence structure can be long or short, which is quite flexible. Huagu Opera has no string music, and mainly uses percussion accompaniment instruments, such as big waist drum, bangzi, big gong, two gongs, cymbals, etc., and mainly plays "three turns". Huagu Opera cooperates with bangzi to command and direct the overall rhythm. Huagu artists often say: "Drums follow dance, dance follows drums, men and women dance to the beat of drums."
