🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Eighteen Martial Arts of Wuchang originated in the Ming Dynasty. It is said that Hong Zhong, a Wuchang native who had served four generations of emperors and served three ministers during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty (1513), returned to his hometown after retirement and built temples and bridges in his hometown to benefit his neighbors. Because Hong Zhong had served as the Minister of the Ministry of Justice and was also good at martial arts and formations, he taught the villagers how to practice weapons after returning to his hometown. He combined the conventional weapons of horse generals and infantry with practical objects in Wuchang villages and folks, and evolved into the unique Eighteen Wooden Weapons and Drilling Methods of Xixi Wuchang. The villagers have passed it down from generation to generation to this day. This is the unique "Eighteen Wooden Weapons of Wuchang" and the drill method. For hundreds of years, the Eighteen Weapons and Drilling Methods of Wuchang have gone through vicissitudes and hardships. During the Cultural Revolution, the "Eighteen Weapons" were confiscated and almost burned. Villagers Jiang Guomin, Jiang Jingui, Hong Wengen, Jiang Zhengming and other four people risked stealing at night and hid in the firewood pile when they came back. Later, they were afraid that it was not safe, so they tied a big stone to it and sank it into the pond in front of their house, covered it with water plants, and the "Eighteen Kinds of Wooden Weapons" were thus preserved. In 1978, the "Eighteen Kinds of Weapons" were unearthed after ten years in the pond. Since then, they have been taken out every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month to add joy to the villagers' festival. The "Eighteen Kinds of Weapons" are all made of wood, with mottled colors and antique flavor. They include: Fangtian Ji, Biyi Claw, Yin Tong, Yang Tong, Jingua Hammer, Li Gongguai, Zaoni Hammer, Wen Pa, Wu Pa, Sanjian Two-edged Sword, Wooden Umbrella, Dapi Lock, Dragon Knife, Phoenix Knife, Caiyang Knife, Dan Knife (a pair), Yu Axe, Wooden Stick, exactly eighteen pieces. When the Wuchang Management Committee excavated the Xixi culture, it reorganized this traditional folk art that had been dormant for a hundred years, and applied to form the Hangzhou Xixi (Wuchang) Folk Martial Arts Team, and further integrated and arranged the unique folk traditional ancient weapon training methods handed down from ancestors. After the establishment of the Hangzhou Xixi (Wuchang) Folk Martial Arts Team, the Wuchang Management Committee and the Wuchang Village secondary organizations attached great importance to the development of Wuchang Eighteen Martial Arts. The Wuchang Management Committee has invested more than 500,000 yuan to support this folk martial arts cultural and artistic project. The leaders of Wuchang Village also personally took charge and hired Mr. Zhang Jianhua, a well-known domestic martial arts coach, as the head coach. The original Wuchang Eighteen Wooden Weapons were excavated, sorted out, and then arranged and taught to form the name: Wuchang Eighteen Martial Arts. The wooden weapons were named: Dragon Knife, Phoenix Knife, Shangyang Knife, Fangtian Halberd, Brother Knife (a pair), Three-pointed Two-edged Knife, Jade Hand Pen Art Claw, Wuchang Stick, Big Splitting Lock, Vajra Umbrella, Golden Gourd Hammer, Wen Rake, Wu Rake, Yin Boring, Yang Boring, Li Gongguai, Zao Ni Hammer, Dragon Fish Axe. Organize more than 100 team members (all villagers of this village), work together, train hard, eliminate cultural faults, and ensure that Wuchang Eighteen Martial Arts have successors! After the reappearance of Wuchang's 18 martial arts, it has received widespread attention and has also achieved certain success. In August 2004, Wuchang's 18 martial arts debuted at the Zhejiang International Wushu Conference and won five first places, two second places, three third places, a total of trophies, 34 gold medals, 10 bronze medals, and 15 silver medals. In September 2004, it was selected by the Zhejiang Great Wall Film and Television Company and the Documentary Semi-Monthly Press to be the first 12 episodes of "Wuchang's 18 Martial Arts" as the theme of "Chinese Martial Arts".
