🎧  Listen to Introduction

The initial rise of Fenghua root carving art is unknown due to the lack of literature. However, in 1955, a bamboo root carving "Crab Cage" created by Huang Xiaojun from the county participated in the National Arts and Crafts Exhibition, which can be regarded as the origin of Fenghua root art. In 1971, Ren Heyong from Changshang began to make root carving pen holders; in 1977, Wang Leixing from Dayan created the tree root carving "Thousand Buddha Pavilion". In 1979, Bao Xiaoyang, in 1984, Zhang Zhenghai, and in 1992, Zhang Jiong successively created root art. According to Ren Heyong, he was inspired by the root art works of Shanghai Friendship Store in 1971 and began to create. In 1978, the figure carvings he designed and created were sold in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and other places. Wang Leixing (born in 1916) from Dayan first engaged in Buddha statue carving under the tutelage of his father Wang Shuixiang (born around 1870), and then turned to root art. Later, Wang Leixing's son Wang Quanhai also began to learn art.
