Yangchun City, located in the southwest of Guangdong, has a karst landform with abundant plants and lush forests, providing rich material resources for root carving art. In the Qing Dynasty, root carving daily necessities, offerings and plastic arts were popular in the local area, and the people called it "wood shadow". After continuous inheritance and development, by the 1940s and 1950s, Yangchun root carving had formed a multi-variety series and was distributed throughout the territory, which has continued to this day. Root carving is a carving made of dead tree roots. The materials used for Yangchun root carving include dozens of species such as longan, lychee, camphor, banyan, mountain azalea, camellia, crape myrtle, osmanthus, and yellow vitex, but living roots cannot be dug up. Instead, the materials are the dead tree roots floating in the mountain pond reservoir (commonly known as water floating wood), the thousand-year sediments buried in the riverbed and underground, the stumps, dead roots, and rotten wood abandoned in the mountains, forests, and roadsides. Different carving varieties have different material and shape requirements. Traditional Yangchun root carving is divided into two major series: artistic root carving and practical root carving. Artistic root carvings are made of tough, peculiar, intertwined, curved and strange root materials, which are washed, peeled, trimmed, carved, polished and oiled (waxed). Among them, the pictographic art root carving series such as figures, animals, landscapes, root painting wall decorations, etc. are either simple and elegant, or rough and bright, or refined and exaggerated, or profound, or vivid; the abstract art root carving series uses the peculiar structure or linear, texture, texture, color and other characteristics of the root material, and gives it a certain philosophical, metaphorical or symbolic meaning through cutting, processing and proposition. Practical root carvings are mostly made of tree heads, stumps, roots, tree tumors, etc. The carving process is basically the same as that of artistic root carvings. There are household items such as tables and chairs, coffee tables, screens, and daily necessities such as walking sticks, tea pots, pen holders, and cigarette holders. In the past one or two decades, Yangchun's artistic root carvings have developed and created Chinese calligraphy root carvings, which have become a new variety series. Calligraphy root carvings must use dry tree roots that are flat and mesh-shaped and resemble the cursive script of Chinese characters as materials. The carving process is particularly particular about applying art to the roots, imagining wonderful things, and processing them skillfully. In particular, Chinese characters with complex fonts and more strokes are deliberately used as the subject matter, and the characters are formed by one root, without splicing or connection, and the harmony between heaven and man, the spirit is vivid, and the charm is endless. It is widely appreciated and collected, and has a broad development prospect. Yangchun root carving is a wonder of folk carving art in our province. Its unique craftsmanship of making full use of materials, turning waste into treasure, and turning decay into magic is a typical embodiment of folk cultural wisdom and creativity. In 1998, Yangchun City was named "Hometown of Ethnic Folk Art (Root Carving and Elegant Stone Art) of Guangdong Province" by the Provincial Department of Culture. However, due to various reasons, Yangchun root carving is currently facing a difficult situation where it is difficult to find root materials and talents, and effective support and protection measures are urgently needed.
