Ninghai root carving
Ninghai root carving is also known as tree root carving, firewood carving, etc. It is known as the "hometown of root carving". The Guangxu "Ninghai County Chronicles" records that "there have been people who make a living by tree art since ancient times." The earliest existing root carving works were made in the Ming Dynasty, and its initial creation period may be before the Southern Song Dynasty. It can be seen that Ninghai root carving skills are very early. By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Ninghai root carving entered its heyday. There were 18 shops operating root carvings in the county alone. In 1946, the government held the "Zhejiang Art Exhibition", and the root carving works of Ninghai native Li Yunbo won the first prize of the Republic of China. But then it declined for a time, and only a few artists still persisted. After entering the new century, it has regained its vitality under the strong advocacy of the government. As the saying goes, the treasure of root carving lies in nature. Ninghai root carving relies on the rich bamboo and wood root resources in the local mountainous areas. With its natural beauty, it is slightly carved by humans. It is a folk art handicraft that turns decay into magic. It mainly uses the roots of rhododendron, oak, green plum, boxwood and other trees as raw materials, soaks in water to peel, processes according to the shape, and carves into various birds, animals, flowers, figures and landscape wonders, etc., which are used as embellishments, decorations and ornaments. Of course, good works are also of great collection value. From an inconspicuous tree root to a finished product, it requires dozens of large and small operation processes such as material selection, conception, processing, preliminary determination, modeling, polishing, trimming and glazing. Some works are like aged wine. The more they are polished, the more they will show their natural charm. At present, the number of professional practitioners of Ninghai root carving has grown to more than 200. The artist Ge Anfei has been named "Chinese Root Art Master". Newspapers and media such as "China Art News" and "Zhejiang Daily" have also published many reports and articles, but relatively speaking, its market development is not yet sound, and the local government is introducing support policies to promote this art.
