Tiger

Henan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Yanzhuang tiger performance is a traditional folk dance in Yanzhuang Village, Wangzhao Township, Qinyang City, Henan Province. In traditional Chinese culture, the tiger is a kind of auspicious animal. The tiger is the king of beasts and can shake the mountains. The tiger dance mainly shows the bravery and power of the tiger to suppress the demons and monsters, pray for a good harvest, auspiciousness and peace for the whole village, and reflects the local people's primitive belief in the worship of spiritual objects. After the "tiger" appears, it first looks in all directions, then shakes its body and tail, rolls and jumps, and the image is realistic, showing bravery and vigor, majestic posture, and a set of skilled techniques. The traditional plots of the tiger performance include "beating the tiger up the mountain", "crossing the bridge backwards", "along the bench", "upside down on the table", "walking on the tightrope", etc. The main feature of the tiger dance is to simulate the habits and movements of the tiger for performance, which is quite random. The accompaniment instruments of the tiger dance mainly include big drums, big hairpins, small cymbals, small gongs, etc., which play a role in setting off the atmosphere and controlling the rhythm of the dance. In November 2014, Jiaozuo's "Tiger Playing" (including Qinyang Yanzhuang Tiger, Wenxian Xizhou Tiger Dance, Zhongzhan Xiaoshang Tiger Dance, Zhongzhan Changjia Wuhu) was announced by the State Council as the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage representative projects.
