Pi Lao Hu, a traditional dance item in the second batch of representative items of municipal intangible cultural heritage. Folk dance Pi Lao Hu, also known as Golden Tiger Lantern Dance, is said to have originated in Hunan and Hubei. At the end of the 18th century, due to the rise of the custom of "dancing the God of Wealth" in the ancient temple fair of the God of Wealth in Danyang, some folk artists introduced the "God Tiger Lantern". In the spring of 1942, Mr. Kang Yiwen, a cultural gentleman in Danyang, invited Mr. Zou Yingzhou, an old tiger lantern artist from Hunan, and Mr. Wang Maosong to cooperate in systematically creating the introduced "God Tiger Lantern", forming the folk dance Pi Lao Hu that has been passed down to this day. Pi Lao Hu has a history of more than 300 years in Danyang. The Republic of China was its heyday. The main performance routines and performance styles of Pi Lao Hu were formed at this time. The performance of Pi Lao Hu mainly consists of four routines: "God of Wealth Attracts Treasures", "Golden Tiger Plays Wooden Stool", "Golden Tiger Jumps on the Mountain", and "Golden Tiger Climbs the Mountain". Later, it was further processed by artist Lv Xiancong, adding the performance routine of "Mother and Son Expressing Love", making the performance more humane. The leather tiger props are simple in shape, bright in color, and the performance movements are delicate and varied. The main performance props are the tiger head made of leather stretched on a wooden model, the tiger skin is sewn with cloth, and the tiger tail is made of steel wire wrapped with cotton cloth and nailed to the back of the leather. The leather shape is painted with yellow, black and white colors, and performed by two people, one playing with the head, and the other bending the waist to play with the body, jumping, jumping, rolling and twisting, lively and lively, and artistically performing the lion's joy, anger, sorrow, joy, movement, stillness, and surprise. It is a traditional folk dance with strong auspicious, festive colors and atmosphere rendering capabilities that integrates appreciation, artistry, and competitiveness. Since the Republic of China, the leather tiger has been well inherited in Danyang area, and the more outstanding artists in performance are basically trained and grown up at this time. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the leather tiger has been welcomed by the masses as a local folk dance with great influence, and it has been widely circulated in the local area. It has participated in events such as the Jiangsu Provincial Folk Art Festival and the Zhenjiang Folk Art Competition, and achieved good results. Since the reform and opening up, influenced by many modern cultural factors, the number of Pi Lao Hu performance teams has shrunk, and it has been difficult to replace personnel. It was once facing the possibility of being lost. With the concern of the local government and the efforts of the old artists, a new generation of performing artists has been trained, so that the traditional Pi Lao Hu dance can be performed on the art stage again, enriching the amateur cultural life of the masses and receiving wide acclaim.
