The paper-cutting art that is popular in Huixian City, Henan Province originated in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. It is mainly distributed in more than 50 villages near Shayao Township and Bobi Town in Huixian City. Paper-cutting is the most popular art form among the people of Huixian. Because the tools and materials used are extremely simple, people post paper-cuts every Spring Festival or festive occasion to decorate their living environment and create a happy and peaceful atmosphere. Huixian paper-cutting originated in an agricultural society. Its themes and contents truly reflect the characteristics of farmers' lives and rural society, and exude a strong rural atmosphere. Its characteristics are mainly positive carving, simple and full composition, vivid and lifelike modeling, fine and smooth knife skills, and strong color contrast. Huixian paper-cutting has a wide range of themes and varieties. It often uses characters, animals, flowers, trees, and insects as the content of expression, and expresses the meaning of exorcising evil and praying for blessings through these images. With the changes in the social environment, people's quality of life has been continuously improved, and contemporary culture has also shown a diversified development trend. Under this situation, the development of Huixian paper-cutting is hindered and declining. Paper-cutting is no longer the only means for artists to make a living as it was in the past. At present, there are fewer and fewer old Huixian paper-cutting artists, and the successor force is in short supply. This ancient folk art style is facing a severe situation of extinction and urgently needs to be rescued.
