Summer cloth is a kind of plain cloth made by hand-spinning natural ramie fiber. Ramie fiber is slender, light, strong, and has good luster. The gaps in its structure are large, breathable, and heat-transferring. It absorbs a lot of water and dissipates moisture quickly. It is the king of natural fibers and is known as the "Chinese grass". These characteristics make the cloth made of it strong, durable, crisp, smooth, breathable and sweat-wicking, and widely used. It can be used as high-end clothing, bedding, mattresses, wall cloths, door curtains, and fabrics for arts and crafts. In 1997, after the application of the County Agricultural Bureau, the state awarded Fenyi County the title of the only "Hometown of Chinese Summer Cloth" in the country. Fenyi has the largest summer cloth dyeing and processing enterprise in the country. As early as the Tang and Song Dynasties, it began to pay tribute to the court with refined summer cloth. In the Song Dynasty, Liu Kezhuang, the prefect of Yuanzhou, said in the tribute "Table" that "the counties of Yuan County used to pay ramie cloth, and now they are all supervised by Fenyi." During the reign of Emperor Chongzhen of the Ming Dynasty, the scientist Song Yingxing (from Fengxin) conducted a field investigation on the planting and weaving of hemp cloth while serving as a teacher in Fenyi. In his famous book "The Exploitation of the Works of Nature", there are two chapters on "waist loom" and "summer cloth", with pictures and texts, which truly describe the situation of this kind of hemp weaving. The current China History Museum still treasures a piece of summer cloth that was transferred from Shuanglin when Emperor Qianlong went to the south of the Yangtze River. Summer cloth, coal and limestone are the three pillar industries of Shuanglin Town. The town has a high-quality ramie planting area of 666.67 hectares. More than 80% of farmers are engaged in summer cloth and related production and operation activities, and 49% of farmers' net income comes from summer cloth production. The Fenyi County Party Committee and County Government attach great importance to the production of ramie summer cloth. Farmers grow hemp, weave it into hemp yarn, and then weave it into summer cloth. Since the 20th century, with the highly developed industrial textile technology today, summer cloth, a traditional handicraft with a history of thousands of years, is on the verge of being lost. The deep processing of summer cloth has continuously extended the ramie industry chain, increasing the added value of ramie. After dyeing the colorful summer cloth, the company processes it into home textile products for export and earns foreign exchange. The products are exported to Southeast Asia and other countries, and the market economic benefits are good.
