🎧  Listen to Introduction

Maotian Lanterns are folk lanterns passed down from generation to generation in Maotian Village, Aocheng Town, Ji'an County. They are exquisitely made, with unique craftsmanship. The number of performers can be large or small, and the performance space can be large or small. They incorporate elements such as dance and acrobatics into the lantern performances. The lanterns are complex and gorgeous, and the skills are endless. In particular, the unique traditional performance scene of "light, moon and water shadow" is very artistic. The Maotian Lantern was originally large in size and was not used for performances. It was a hanging lantern that was both lighting and viewing. Later, the villagers took down the hanging lanterns, carried them by hand, joined the Lantern Festival Lantern Parade, and went from village to village to congratulate and play. In order to facilitate the performance, the lantern body has been continuously improved and gradually became exquisite and compact. The performance of Maotian Lanterns follows standardized and rigorous traditional customs and procedures. Generally, during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival every year, activities such as celebrating the New Year, worshiping the gods, and parading and congratulating performances are held to entertain the villagers and keep in touch. The performances of Maotian Lantern include: throwing lanterns to the left (right), throwing lanterns forward (back), throwing lanterns horizontally, throwing lanterns opposite to each other, throwing lanterns high, top flowers, chest flowers, back flowers, throwing lanterns in place or in a moving arc, throwing lanterns in a left-right cross-shaped pattern, and throwing lanterns high in a left-right eight-shaped pattern. In the performance, bow step, horse step, squat step, rest step, tiptoe step, broken step, cloud step, rubbing step, dwarf step and other footwork and stage scheduling methods such as passing through flowers, exiting water, and rounding the stage are often used. The dance is endless and dazzling. In order to promote the work of living inheritance, in 2009, the Ji'an County Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center established a student lantern performance team in Aocheng Town Central Primary School, Ji'an County Haier Hope Primary School, etc., hired old artists to teach the skills of Maotian Lantern, and guided the choreography of Maotian Lantern Dance Program, and participated in the county folk art competition, cultural art festival, cultural heritage day performance, campus lantern competition and even the provincial children's art festival.
