Nanchang Xuan paper embroidery is a kind of handmade embroidery that perfectly combines the art of Xuan paper painting and calligraphy with embroidery techniques for more than a thousand years in China. It is inherited from the "paper embroidery" technique of the Gu family in Guzhuang, Dainan Town, Xinghua City, Jiangsu Province, and is distributed in parts of Nanchang, Pingxiang, Hangzhou, Jiujiang and other cities. "Paper embroidery" is a handmade skill of the Gu family that is "passed down to sons and daughters-in-law but not to daughters". The Gu family found out from the tablets offered in the Ming Dynasty that "paper embroidery" was born during the Tianqi period of the Ming Dynasty, with a history of more than 700 years. It was founded by Gu Wenhua, the second generation of Gu Xiaocun, a branch of the Gu family who lived in Guzhuang, Dainan Town, Xinghua City, the ancient capital of Jiangsu Province, and his wife Yin. It is a family-inherited handmade skill of a branch of the Gu family. Later, due to historical changes and population migration, the "paper embroidery" technique spread to Gaoyou and Xiajia areas. After the founding of New China, Gu Ende, the eighth-generation inheritor of "paper embroidery", moved to Nanchang, Jiangxi, brought "paper embroidery" to Nanchang, and passed on the "paper embroidery" skills to his son, the ninth-generation inheritor Gu Yuchun, so that it could be carried forward. Gu Yuchun, the twelfth-generation descendant of the Gu family, lived up to the expectations of his family, devoted himself to studying the ancestral craftsmanship, repeatedly experimented, and innovated. He not only eliminated the traditional dependence of "paper embroidery" on paste, but also abandoned the monotonous and extensive thread materials, creating a "rice paper embroidery" that has both traditional "paper embroidery" technical characteristics and modern craft characteristics. Nanchang rice paper embroidery uses rice paper as a carrier and ink painting as a form of expression, filling a gap in Chinese embroidery, and gradually becoming an important type of embroidery in Gan embroidery, which plays an irreplaceable role in enhancing the brand value of Jiangxi's "Gan embroidery". Its historical origins, cultural characteristics and production technology are of extremely high research value.
