In Beiwang and Bai'an, Jiangxiang Town, Nanchang County, there is an ancient custom that from the fourth to the sixth day of the first lunar month every year, a Yellow River formation that is said to have been passed down from ancient times is placed on the sandy land of the river beach near the village. The lantern array is composed of bamboo poles more than two meters high, with a red or green bamboo pole erected about every one meter, and a colored lantern with a lotus base on the bamboo pole. According to local legend, the Yellow River formation was created by the three sisters of Tongtian Sect Master Jin Xiao, Yin Xiao and Bi Xiao. For thousands of years, the Three Xiao Niangniangs have been regarded as the patron saint of peace and happiness, so the Yellow River Lantern is also called the Happy Lantern and the Peace Lantern. The lantern array consists of 99 bends, and you should not look back after walking all the way through, symbolizing smooth sailing, happiness and peace. Some people also say that the Nine-bend Yellow River Formation is named because its route is three turns and nine turns, implying the ninety-nine bends of the Yellow River in the world. The Yellow River Formation has been passed down for a long time in the areas of Beiwang, Jiangxiang and Bai'an, and has a long history. However, due to wars in modern times, the Yellow River Formation was suspended for a long time, especially in the 1910s, when it was listed as a superstitious activity and banned. It was not until the late 1970s that it was restarted. In recent years, with the support of the local government and the efforts of the masses, Bai'an Village has built a new cultural activity center, and opened up a venue inside to arrange the Yellow River Formation. Fixed bamboo poles are set up inside, and a high platform for the Three Flute Goddesses is enshrined. A few days before the start of each year, small colored lights with lotus bases are placed on the bamboo poles, and the route of the formation is marked with colored ribbons according to the Yellow River Formation diagram. The statue of the Three Flute Goddesses is placed on the high platform and decorated with colored lights.
