Suzhou is an important central city in the Yangtze River Delta region, and is also a national cultural city and a scenic tourist city. In the development history of more than 2,000 years, Suzhou clay sculpture has always enjoyed a high reputation. It is as famous as Chaozhou Fuyang clay sculpture, Tianjin clay figurine Zhang, and Wuxi Huishan clay figurine. It is an important representative of Chinese clay sculpture. Suzhou clay sculpture can be divided into two categories. One is large clay sculpture, that is, temple statues; the other is small clay sculptures, that is, Huqiu clay figurines. Traditional Suzhou clay statues are famous for their delicacy, vividness, and elegance. The convenience of obtaining materials is one of its major advantages. When making statues, local mountain mud is generally used. After nailing the skeleton, preparing the mud (rough and fine processing of the mud), applying the mud, painting or gilding, etc., the sculpture is shaped. Each large step contains several small steps. It takes at least one or two years to complete a work. The material of Huqiu clay figurines is taken from the clay around Huqiu. This kind of soil is black, fine and sticky, which is very suitable for shaping small clay figurines. The biggest feature of Huqiu clay figurines is their strong realism. The works are generally about 10 to 15 centimeters high, and most of them are based on opera stories. The most distinctive feature of Huqiu clay figurines is the image-making, also known as "sculpting the real", which means facing a specific person, capturing his or her spirit in the shortest possible time, and using various colors of clay to mold the image on the spot. The characteristics of the sculpted characters are distinct and lifelike, often achieving the effect of both form and spirit. Suzhou clay sculptures combine folklore, religion, sculpture, painting, calligraphy and other arts into one, and have high artistic and historical and cultural research value.
