Zhejiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Shengzhou clay sculptures, from the many lifelike statues of gods with different expressions in temples of past dynasties, reflect that folk art has a deep mass base. Especially under the guidance and guidance of Liu Yin, a famous national craft master, who has returned to his hometown many times, there are many talented clay sculpture artists. Many works, such as Mi Fengguang's "Hundred Masks of Chinese Opera", "Chinese Nation" and "Thousand Masks of Thousands of People", have won national gold medals and have been performed abroad many times; Zhang Liren's group sculpture "Nine Songs" won the National Arts and Crafts Hundred Flowers Award, and Lv Hongbao's "Nanhai Guanyin" and "Large Heroes" are popular with the masses and have been ordered continuously. After opening a store in Hangzhou for 10 years, the products have entered Shanghai and Hong Kong, and are exported to international markets such as Japan and the United States. Qiu Yueshi's micro-sculptures "The Legend of the White Snake" and "Song and Dance" show more artistic skills. After the reform and opening up, the ancient folk art has regained its glory and had a glorious past. There have been thousands of artists working in the industry. In the 1980s, a clay sculpture factory was set up in the city, and the products were once the best gifts for county people. However, artworks are also subject to the constraints of the market economy. After the dissolution of the county-run factories, many representative arts also started family workshops, but they still found it difficult to gain a foothold in the market. Therefore, Zhang Liren was invited to register a cold porcelain factory, Lv Huancheng was invited by Guangdong to sculpt statues, Lv Hongbao went to Hangzhou to open a clay sculpture shop, and Qiu Yueshi retired. Now only the Zhejiang Clay Figurine Mi Research Institute and the craft master Mi Fengguang are left in the city to operate bleakly. At present, Shengzhou clay sculpture has no successors and is gradually declining, and it is in urgent need of government support and national protection. In June 2007, it was included in the second batch of Zhejiang Province's intangible cultural heritage list. Information source: Shaoxing Cultural Center Information source: Shaoxing Cultural Center
