Yangshan Temple Fair is a folk custom project in the third batch of representative projects of Xuzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. According to historical records, "Yangshan Zen Temple, a two-dynasty building, has magnificent halls, majestic spirit, and towering ancient trees. It has the reputation of pillowing on Geyi and carrying the Yellow River". It is a famous temple in Jiangbei. There are more than a hundred monks in the temple. The morning bells and evening drums, and the sound of chanting scriptures resound through the mountains and forests. Around the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, it was determined that the eighth day of the fourth lunar month every year is the Yangshan Incense Festival. To this day, people in the area of dozens of miles around Gupi Town still continue to go to the Yangshan Temple Fair on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month every year. People who do business, folk artists perform, and watch the excitement gather in the Gupi Street Market, with no less than 30,000 people. In ancient times, the Yangshan Temple Fair lasted for three days every year. Foreign troupes from all over the country included Peking Opera, Huangmei Opera, Lv Opera, Circus, Bangzi Opera, etc. There were also artists such as drums, yangqin, boxing, and monkeys. All of them occupied the venue before the seventh day of April, and there were also special stages for performances in order. The temple fair was held at the end of spring plowing and planting and before summer harvest and planting, which was the best time for people to exchange agricultural and sideline products. Before liberation, the main business was to trade grain, produce farm tools and large livestock, and now it mainly deals in various clothing and daily necessities. With the improvement of infrastructure such as transportation and communications, the number of people participating in the temple fair has also increased year by year. In addition to local people, it also attracted a large number of people from neighboring areas to participate. At the same time, the social identities of the people participating in the temple fair activities are also complex and diverse, including officials, farmers, workers, businessmen, adults and children, and there are people praying for blessings and making wishes, showing talents, setting up stalls to do business, and even fortune-telling. These constitute the concentration and complexity of the personnel. Although the form and content of the temple fair cultural activities have changed with the development of the times, they are still deeply stamped with the imprint of tradition. Its activities are mainly based on traditional national folk art, with a strong traditional cultural atmosphere and distinct local characteristics.
