Peixian Flower and Bird Characters
Pei County bird and flower characters are a traditional art project on the second batch of representative projects of Xuzhou's municipal intangible cultural heritage. According to historical records, during the reign of Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty, the great scholar Cai Yong was a student of the emperor. He saw that the servants occasionally formed characters by brushing the wall with chalk brooms, which inspired him. So he made a special board pen, dipped it in ink and wrote quickly, and the white lines appeared. From then on, he created "flying white calligraphy". "The Biography of Yang Qiu in the Book of Han" records that "Hongdu characters and bird seals are full of bamboo slips". It is said that Cai Yong was commissioned by the court to write the Dafengge stele in Pei County. During his stay in Pei, he taught the production methods and writing skills of flying white calligraphy utensils to the literati and sages of the time. They competed to grind them first and became a good story. Pei County's bird and flower characters evolved from the combination of flying white calligraphy and bird and insect seals. To this day, there is still a folk song in Pei County that "Pei County's bird and flower characters, Zhonglang personally passed them down. They were flying characters back then, and they are getting fresher and fresher." Peixian bird and flower calligraphy has been developed and evolved gradually by absorbing and learning from the brushwork of bird and insect seal script and the modeling of bird and flower painting on the basis of Feibai calligraphy. Its colors have increased from the original simple black and white to the current multi-color. The writing tools have also developed from the original brushes to the current willow root pens, board pens and other special tools. Due to the influence of geographical conditions, historical conditions, fashion factors and cultural cultivation, it has undergone changes to varying degrees and is marked by the times. Peixian bird and flower calligraphy has the artistic characteristics of combining calligraphy and painting, improvisation and obvious style. It emphasizes vividness, change and overall coordination, avoids similarity, and does not excessively pursue the fancy colors. Artists are not only good at writing single-character words, names, and idioms, but also can write multi-character sentences and long couplets at will, which makes people applaud. Peixian bird and flower calligraphy is attached to people's lives. Whether it is its inner meaning or its external artistic modeling, it is closely linked to the people's society's outlook on life, world outlook, and aesthetics, reflecting the traditional cultural spirit of people-oriented. It looks like words when viewed from close up, and like paintings when viewed from a distance; it is similar to an image but not the same, and it combines fun in books and education in art. It is pleasing to the eye and can be appreciated by both the elite and the masses. It is understood, loved and shared by the public. (No pictures available, welcome to provide.)
