The Flower God Belief in the Flower God Temple is a folklore project in the fourth batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage. The "Flower God Temple" was built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty and is used to pray for the prosperity of the flower industry. It was once a holy place for flower farmers in the south of the city to worship, and it is also a shining business card in the characteristic culture of the ancient capital Nanjing. The Flower God Temple has been engaged in flower cultivation for more than 700 years. It is said that roses were planted here as early as the Yuan Dynasty. In 1368, after Zhu Yuanzhang, the founding emperor of the Ming Dynasty, established Nanjing as the capital, in order to have a variety of flowers to decorate the palace all year round, he ordered flower growers from all over the country to move to the vicinity of Fengde Gate to cultivate hundreds of flowers. The southern suburbs of Nanjing have been famous for their many flowers and trees in history. During the Ming Dynasty, Zheng He brought back tropical ornamental plants from his several voyages to the West, enriching the flower varieties in this area. Later, due to the relocation of the capital to Beijing, the flower industry in Nanjing was once depressed. But the villagers in this area have been engaged in flower cultivation for generations. The heyday of the Flower God Temple was during the reigns of Emperor Kangxi and Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. On the first and fifteenth day of every month, there were many tourists. Both high officials and common people came to enjoy the flowers. It was fashionable for girls in the city to pin a fragrant flower on their braids, which resulted in a shortage of fragrant flowers. In order to pray for the prosperity of the flower industry, flower farmers placed their hopes on the flower gods. So a Flower God Temple was built in the village. The Flower God Temple is located on a high hill in a hilly area 3 kilometers south of Yuhuatai District outside Zhonghuamen. It is composed of three naturally independent temples. The three rooms in the east are dedicated to Guanyin Bodhisattva, and the three tall rooms in the middle are dedicated to the Bodhisattva of Good Deeds (Si) on both sides. It is said that it was the Dharma body that patrolled during the Tang Dynasty. The three rooms on the west are the real temple of the God of Flowers. It is said that the temple enshrines the God of Flowers, Emperor Tang Minghuang, who rides a white horse, holds a white fan, and has bright eyes. The gods of flowers each occupy their own positions and are clearly distributed in the flower island. The peony fairy Yang Yuhuan is graceful and plump. The back of the island is built with rockery, and the statues of the gods of flowers are different, and there is also a statue of the land. Outside the gate of the Temple of the God of Flowers is a square, on which the most impressive "Phoenix Grand Stage" in the south of the city was built. The stage is tall and majestic, with four eaves protruding outward. Operas are performed for three days from March 15th to 17th of the lunar calendar every year. There are two wells behind the stage. It is probably because of the reflection of the water surface and the resonance of the well mouth that the actors' singing voices are particularly beautiful. It is known as the "Shuangjing Village Sound". The Temple of the God of Flowers also has the birthday of all flowers on February 12th and the birthday of chrysanthemums on September 16th. During these two days, flower farmers come to burn incense and worship Buddha, praying that the God of Flowers will bless people and flowers. During the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, the Flower God Temple was destroyed in the war, but people believed in the Fairy of Flowers so much that they merged the Flower God Temple with the Shan'en Temple. Legend has it that the Shan'en Temple enshrined a god with an extremely ugly face but a very kind heart. After the two temples were merged, it was named the Flower God Temple, with two main halls and ninety-nine side rooms. It worshipped both the Fairy of Flowers and the Saint of Shan'en, and the incense gradually prospered. During the Republic of China period, the flowers of the Flower God Temple were still very famous, but the good times did not last long. On December 13, 1937, the Japanese army occupied Nanjing and the Flower God Temple was severely damaged. In the wind and rain of the years, although the Flower God Temple no longer exists, "The Flower God is in Full Bloom", one of the new forty scenes of Jinling, has left people with many beautiful reverie.
