The Luoshan Dragon originated in the Ming Dynasty and has a history of more than 400 years. It is one of the important folk cultural activities in Luoshan Village, Hefeng Town, Lishui County, Jiangsu Province. The local people rely on Shijiu Lake for their livelihood. When the New Year comes, they sing and dance on the lake beach, and the dragon dance circles to drive away demons and pray for good weather and population safety. Over time, Luoshan Village has the custom of dragon dancing. The dragon dance usually starts on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month and lasts until the 18th day of the first lunar month of the following year, a total of 25 days. At this time, it is the dry season in winter, and there are large areas of lake beaches that can be used. Therefore, the Luoshan Dragon is huge, with a body length of nearly 100 meters. There are as many as 500 participants, and it is known as the "largest dragon in Jiangnan". After the rise of the Luoshan Dragon, it has had an important impact in the surrounding areas such as Lishui and Gaochun. "Going to Luoshan to see the dragon in the twelfth lunar month and the first lunar month" has become a popular cultural entertainment activity. People also take this opportunity to visit relatives and friends, strengthen feelings, and enhance exchanges. At that time, flags were flying on the huge lake beach, muskets and trumpets were sounding constantly, children were dressed up in colorful costumes, and a white dragon was circling on the lake beach. There was a surge of people and the audience was crowded. The scene was very spectacular. Dragon dance is mainly divided into three parts: jumping beads, jumping dragons, and jumping clouds. Jumping beads: the dragon head is led forward by the person holding the beads. Jumping dragons: the person holding the beads holds the fiery red dragon beads and tempts and teases in every possible way. Under the guidance of the person holding the beads, the dragon jumps up and down. Its formations include giant dragon tail swinging, long snake formation, circling formation, etc. Jumping clouds: performed by 66 boys aged 8 to 12. They are dressed in colorful clothes, colorful hats, and embroidered shoes. Each of them holds two cloud boards with clouds painted on them. They perform in the empty field surrounded by the dragon body, which is divided into two types: picture formation and word formation. The picture formation has various formations such as "double dragons out of water", "full of stars", "triangle", "pentagon", etc. The production process of Luoshan dragon is quite exquisite. The main steps include making the dragon body skeleton, pasting paper, and painting. The dragon head is 2.3 meters high and 2.2 meters wide. The dragon body has 24 sections, each section is 2.8 meters long, and the whole dragon body is nearly 100 meters long. There are 108 generals on the dragon head, including Liu, Guan, and Zhang, the three sworn brothers in Taoyuan, and folk heroes such as Yang Zongbao, Mu Guiying, and Fan Lihua. During the performance, a thick rope about 10 meters long needs to be connected to the dragon tail, which is dragged by a dozen strong young men to play a balancing role. The purpose is to prevent the dragon tail from falling out of the hands due to excessive inertia during the dragon dance. After the dragon is made, it will be consecrated on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. In addition, dragon flags, colorful flags, large and small lanterns, as well as trumpets and horseshoe cannons need to be made. The second largest category is the production of cloud boards and colorful embroidery. There are 66 cloud boards in total, with the outline made of bamboo strips, and then covered with wax paper, gold paper and various colored papers, with cloud patterns painted on them. Color embroidery is divided into making headwear, embroidered clothes and embroidered flowers.
