Spring Ox Dance of the Zhuang Nationality
The Spring Ox Dance, as a kind of cattle culture, belongs to the category of agricultural culture. It has been preserved among the Zhuang people in Tianlin County and is also an important part of their Spring Festival customs. The "Spring Ox" is cleverly woven with bamboo pieces. The head and horns of the ox are covered with cotton paper and painted with ox eyes. The body of the ox is a piece of black or gray cloth. The dancers beat gongs and drums in the village. Two people crawl into the bottom of the cloth, one supports the head of the ox in front, and the other bends his waist and arches his back to shake the tail. Behind him is a man holding a plow frame. During the performance, there are usually gong and drum teams and dance teams to form a Spring Ox Team. The gong and drum team is composed of suona players, gong and drum players, and qin players. The gong and drum team is in the front, followed by the lantern board, also called the incense pavilion. On the front is a "cow image", with the word "spring" embedded in the back, and auspicious couplets on both sides. There are also four spring lanterns, with reliefs of "dragon and phoenix presenting auspiciousness" and auspicious couplets such as "abundant harvest" and "peace and prosperity for the country and the people", and candles inserted in the lanterns; the spring cow is in the middle: two people play the cow, one dances the cow's head, and the other plays the cow's body, wrapped in a corresponding outer coat according to the yin and yang years. There are two shepherds, who wear white-edged open-collared shepherd's clothes, holding a bull whip, and from time to time regulate the cow's shape and guide the spring cow's direction. Then there are the fisherman, the woodcutter, the farmer, and the scholar. The fisherman is an old man with white hair and black hair, open-minded, cheerful and humorous, holding a fishing rod and carrying a fish basket. The woodcutter wears a waisted short collar, holds a knife and an axe, and carries a load of firewood. The farmer carries a wooden plow and is barefoot in a short coat. The scholar is well-mannered and reads papers. There is also a man dressed as a village girl, carrying grass and rice buckets for the cattle. There is also a man dressed as an old woman, shaking a rotten cattail leaf fan, funny and fancy, known as the old tea woman. Village girls and old women move around in the team, making fun of each other or teasing each other. Sometimes there are also village masters and accountants, wearing Ma褂, holding an abacus and account books. The cattle team is welcomed into the hall by the owner; the dance team follows and performs in each village in turn. First, the spring ox circles around the field, digs its hooves, shakes its horns, flicks its tail, and rolls in the mud. The movements are relatively simple. Then the dance team performs various agricultural activities, and the young people accompany it with wooden leaves. In the hall, the spring ox worships the heaven and earth and the owner of the host to the beat of the drum, and visits the kitchen, pig pen, and cow pen, chanting all the way: "Evil spirits, evil pigs and cattle plague go far away." This is called "visiting the gods." After the dance, the villagers often bring fragrant tea, glutinous rice cakes, etc. to comfort them. During this time, the host keeps setting off firecrackers. As soon as the firecrackers sounded, the ox team continued to dance, until the spring ox lay on the ground and couldn't get up, which attracted bursts of laughter from the crowd and filled the mountains and fields with joy. After the performance, it was often the fifth watch when the roosters crowed. The host treated them to tea, fruit, wine and food, and they drank until they were dizzy and then kowtowed everywhere, which was called "returning to the spirit". After returning to the spirit, they left in a team. It is said that the folk dance of the spring ox can bring good weather, peace and prosperity, continuous promotion in official positions, peace in all seasons, bumper harvests, and prosperity of livestock. With the development of the times, the dance of the spring ox has added new content to praise the new society and new life. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)(No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
