Lion dance performance is a traditional folk art activity in Nanshan District, Shenzhen. The lion dance in Nanshan originated from the lion dance in Guangdong. In the late Qing Dynasty, there was a unicorn team in Xiangnan Village, which was good at dancing unicorns. In the 1930s, the unicorn team was changed to a lion dance team, and lion dance began with superb skills. In 1937, a lion dance team was also established in Nantou City, which often performed in Nantou City and nearby villages. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Nanyuan Village established a lion dance team of more than 100 people, which was very powerful and had a great influence in the Nantou area. In 1963, Daxin Village also established a lion dance team, which performed lion dance and martial arts in Nantou City and surrounding villages during festivals. These lion dance teams gathered and dispersed from time to time, and had several ups and downs. After entering the new century, several lion dance teams in Xiangnan Village, Daxin Village, and Nanyuan Village still persisted in their activities, and their performance level continued to improve. According to traditional customs, when a new lion dances for the first time, a solemn "opening and dotting the eyes" ceremony must be held, and the respected elders in the village will "dot the eyes" for the lion. Before each lion dance performance, an open space is selected for the opening ceremony to give the lion "spiritual energy". The basic steps of the Nanshan lion dance focus on horse stance, which is mainly based on the four-square horse, with jumping steps, Qilin steps, cross steps, bow steps, Ding steps, empty steps, leaning steps, reverse steps, miscellaneous steps and other steps. The lion head and the lion tail are coordinated and cooperate with each other under the coordination of the drum rhythm. The lion head also uses the closing of the eyes and the opening and closing of the mouth to express the form of joy, anger, sorrow and happiness during the performance. The lion dance contains stylized performance routines such as "leaving the cave", "going up the mountain", "patrolling the mountain", "picking green", "dancing with the pillar", and "entering the cave", among which "picking green" and "dancing with the pillar" are the most abundant. In addition to inheriting the traditional lion dance routines, the lion dance teams in Nanshan also have their own characteristics, such as walking on plum blossom piles and high piles in Xiangnan Village, the high platform performance in Nanyuan Village, and the flexible and varied performances in Daxin Village.
