Daxi Ancestral Hall Ceremony

Guangdong
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Daxi ancestral hall ceremony is a concentrated representation of the activities of the Li clan ancestral hall. The Li clan ancestral hall is built in the style of the main ancestral hall of each generation, forming a cluster of ancestral halls with a clear inheritance lineage and a series of folk activities. In addition to the obvious inheritance of architectural features, the ancestral halls representing each generation have the same ceremony for ancestors, with only the difference of grandeur and simplicity. They all have very strong local characteristics, fully reflecting the profound and broad Chaoshan cultural heritage, educating generations of people, and also playing a role in enhancing cohesion, uniting fellow countrymen at home and abroad, and enhancing cultural exchanges. The main ancestral hall is located in Jingmei Village, Daxi Town, Jiexi County, at the northern foot of Jinshan Mountain. In the late Ming Dynasty, after the ancestor of the Daxi Li clan, Qingquan Gong, and his sons Huayang and Shaoyang moved from Shanghang County, Fujian Province to Daxi (there is a legend of "Li Zhi Dayuan"), in the 25th year of Qianlong (1760), the clan ancestral hall was built by the descendants of the fourth generation Li Tiansheng, covering an area of 1,882 square meters. The reconstruction work started on the second day of the ninth lunar month in 1994 and was completed on the 21st day of the eleventh lunar month in 1997. A restoration ceremony was held and the traditional sacrificial rituals were restored. The sacrificial rituals of Daxi Ancestral Hall have a high value in the study of Chaoshan folklore, and are a very valuable reference for the study of surname culture, the history of immigration in Chaoshan area and the ancient history of Jiexi area.
