Polo Festival is a popular custom in Guangzhou, also known as Nanhai God Festival and Nanhai Polo Festival. Polo Festival Temple Fair is one of the largest folk traditional temple fairs in Guangzhou, with a history of more than a thousand years. The festival period is from February 11th to 13th of the lunar calendar every year, and the 13th is the main festival. People from dozens of miles around Nanhai Temple (Polo Temple) come to "visit Polo", including water and land areas. People from all over the country gather to rush to the temple fair, and the excitement is better than the Spring Festival. There is a local saying that "the first thing is to visit Polo, and the second is to marry a wife", which compares visiting the temple fair with major events in life, which shows how much importance it has. It is difficult to verify when Polo Festival originated. However, the grand occasion of the Polo Festival can be seen in the first and second poems of Liu Kezhuang's "Immediate Events" in the Southern Song Dynasty: "Incense is burning in thousands of houses, and fireworks are in February. The streets are empty and people go out to the Sea God Temple." "Children's team in the East Temple, big merchants' boats in the south wind. I wonder how the current Guangzhou market is like the ancient Yangzhou." After the Ming Dynasty, the area around the Nanhai Temple has undergone major changes in both environment and function. With the decline of Fuxu Port's trade, although the rulers still attach importance to the sea sacrifice ceremony held in the Nanhai Temple, its function has evolved more into tourism, especially the annual Polo Temple Fair has become a place for people to entertain themselves, and folk sacrifices and folk activities have become more and more intense, and they have become prosperous in the Qing Dynasty. The "Bolo Waiji" written by Cui Bi, a scholar from Panyu during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty, vividly describes the lively scene of the temple fair at that time: "In the early days of February every year, people from far and near gather around the Polo Temple. Boats, small boats and large ships are moored for more than ten miles. Those who cannot reach the shore use long poles and wooden planks to make a bridge and cross dozens of boats." The Polo Festival continues to this day. People burn incense and worship the God of the South China Sea here. It is purely a folk prayer and wish-making. It is no longer related to the official worship of the God of the South China Sea for maritime trade. The actual significance of the temple fair has changed. In the 1950s, the ancient temple fell into disrepair and was later impacted by extreme leftist ideas. The temple fair was interrupted for many years. In the 1980s, the ancient temple was rebuilt and the temple fair began to resume. From the worship of the government, it evolved into folk entertainment. The history of Boluo Dan witnessed the development of ancient Chinese sea worship culture. The folks called the Temple of the South China Sea as Boluo Temple, the Nanhai God Festival as Boluo Dan, and Da Xi Sikong as Boluo God. The traditions of Boluo Temple and Boluo Dan have been enduring among the folks. The name Boluo Dan itself is the product of the grafting of marine culture and local language. Foreign languages are easy to take root in Guangzhou, which is also part of Guangzhou's marine character. Boluo Dan is closely related to people's lives. The custom of buying Boluo chicken integrates the Guangzhou people's tradition of "talking about meaning" and forms a unique temple fair culture. Boluo Dan continues to be lively and popular to this day. People who go to the temple fair still like to buy a few Boluo chickens as gifts for relatives and friends for good luck. However, with the progress of society and the development of science and technology, the changes in the content and form of Boluo Dan cannot keep up with the changes in people's entertainment and aesthetic tastes. Some traditional customs have been deformed or disappeared, and the inheritance and development of Boluo chicken is even more endangered.
