🎧  Listen to Introduction

Paper-cutting is a traditional folk art in Tai'an. It is mostly used to decorate windows, walls, ceilings, lanterns, noodle jars, paper buckets, etc. during the Spring Festival or other festive occasions. In the past, except for a small number of folk artists, most of the paper-cutting authors were rural women. The themes were mostly auspicious objects or idols of gods, with a strong local flavor. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, paper-cutting art broke through the scope of physical decoration and developed into an independent art. Paper-cutting artists often use the magnificent scenery of Mount Tai as the theme, or create single works, or create illustrations, comic strips, calligraphy and painting bindings for literary works, or make slides, stage art, etc., and create a large number of paper-cutting artworks with unique Mount Tai style. Tai'an paper-cutting art is represented by Ke Daxian, director of the Chinese Paper-cutting Research Association and vice president of the Shandong Paper-cutting Society. He has published nearly a thousand works, and his works enthusiastically eulogize the new era, new style, new characters, and new life. In 1981, his two works "Flowers of Folk Art" and "Bixia Temple" participated in the 4th Japanese Paper-cutting Exhibition held in Tokyo. "Flowers of Folk Art" is based on the folk songs and dances of Mount Tai, such as donkey running, lion dancing, land boat and butterfly catching. It boldly uses exaggeration and deformation, and is light, joyful and full of romanticism; "Bixia Temple" is based on the scenery of Mount Tai, using scattered points 1, breaking through the limitations of time, space and scenic spots, with rigorous composition, clear outlines, refined lines, bright and beautiful, full of ideal interest and natural harmony. Most of Ke Daxian's works are included in various national paper-cutting collections. Among them, "Flying Across the Sea of Clouds" is collected by the Sino-Japanese Art Research Association, and "Longtan Waterfall", "Taishan Nantianmen" and "Taishan New Road" are collected by the Japanese Paper-cutting Association, and "Morning Song of Dai Temple" won the Excellence Award of the 1989 National Paper-cutting Grand Prix. Zhang Dengshan, a member of the Chinese Paper-cutting Artists Association, uses paper-cutting art to express the majestic landscape of Mount Tai. He uses an artistic technique that combines romanticism and realism, boldly exaggerates the layout of the picture, and meticulously depicts the scenery. With rich and unique imagination and smooth and eye-catching lines, he vividly reproduces the famous landscapes such as the Dai Temple, Black Dragon Pool, Confucius's landing place, Zhongtianmen, Duishong Mountain, Tianjie, sea of clouds, and sunrise. Among them, "Tianfu Temple of Dongyue God Palace" won the "Excellent Award" of the "Chinese Contemporary Artists' Works Competition" held by the Chinese Paper-cutting Artists Association in Tianjin.
