Xiangshan paper-cutting has a long history. Paper-cutting patterns were found in pottery unearthed from the Tashan ruins in 1988, which shows how early it started. This ancient folk art style was already popular among the people during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Women in every village in Xiangshan could cut beautiful paper flowers with their skillful hands. It is known that a large number of paper-cutting masters such as Xu Zhushan and Gao Miaolan emerged during the Republic of China. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, a group of paper-cutting artists such as Xu Zhongjie, Fu Yijie and Xie Caihua emerged. Among them, Xie Caihua also built the first-class Xiangshan Caihua Paper-cutting Art Museum in the country, which collects more than 12,000 of his works, with a total length of more than 4,000 meters. The largest masterpiece is 36 square meters. He has won the Shanghai World Guinness Record twice and was on the gold medal list of the 7th China Art Festival. Xiangshan paper-cutting uses various colored wax paper, rice paper, glue, etc. as materials, and uses scissors, carving knives, pencils, brushes, etc. as tools. It is cut and carved through the artist's production processes such as conception, drafting, cutting and lining background paper. In addition to being drawn from daily life, such as window art, shoe flowers, bellyband flowers, pillow flowers, curtain flowers, jacket flowers, waist flowers, hat flowers, etc., the works are also drawn from elements that are very characteristic of Xiangshan, such as many patterns and works that express the sea, fishing nets, boats, fish, etc. Among them, there is a cut-out of "Hundred Boats", which describes the evolution of fishing boats in Xiangshan throughout the ages. It can be said to be an artistic display of the history of local fishery development. In addition, there are works that reflect the current social dynamics and various social lives in all walks of life. At present, the inheritance of Xiangshan paper-cutting art is in a good state. The local government has included the funds for protecting the project in the fiscal budget and established a research association organization to provide the necessary conditions for further training successors.
