🎧  Listen to Introduction

Sizhou Opera originated during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty. In Jiangsu, there were three old farmers named Qiu, Ge and Zhang who loved folk music. When they rested from work, they often composed folk songs to pray for a peaceful and prosperous year. There are two types of folk songs, one is called Taiping Tune and the other is called Hunter Tune. Later, due to successive famines, Zhang sang in Haizhou and later developed into Huaihai Opera. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, Wei Yuehua, the second-generation inheritor of Sizhou Opera, brought Sizhou Opera to the Huaibei area. Later, it was passed on to Sun Huaxian, Ding Xianming, Wei Shengyun, Liu Suxia and others, most of whom have now become the leaders of Sizhou Opera in northern Anhui. Huaibei Sizhou Opera has a high-pitched, melodious and graceful singing style. "Yixin Tune" is a major feature of Sizhou Opera singing. It has many florid tunes, and the same tune is different in the actors' singing. On the basis of the four, six and eight sentences, "Yangqiang Baidiao" and "Xingqiang Guoban", free selection and arbitrary performance are made. This pleasant impromptu singing is called "Yixin Tune". Its performance is based on rap, and draws heavily on folk dance forms such as "flower pressing field", "cart dance", "land boat dance", "lantern dance", "donkey running", etc., which are full of the rich rural flavor of northern Anhui. The accompanying instruments include: local pipa, flute, suona, sheng, erhu, and small sanxian. Representative works include "Picking Cotton", "Beating Dry Sticks", "Blocking Horses", "The Whole Family Fights Against Japan", and "Countryside Love". Huaibei Sizhou Opera is closely integrated with local folk dances and folk music. The subject matter and content are derived from people's lives, supplemented by dialects and colloquialisms. It is simple and vivid, friendly and natural, and is deeply loved by the masses in northern Anhui.
