Papermaking is one of the four great inventions of ancient China. Xuan paper is the most outstanding representative of traditional handmade paper products and ranks first among the four treasures of the study. It has a history of more than 1,500 years. Xuan paper is produced in Xiaoling area southwest of Jing County, Anhui Province. The climate here is mild and the rainfall is abundant. The special karst mountains are suitable for the growth of celtis trees, and the alluvial plains are suitable for the production of long-stem rice. Both celtis trees and rice stalks provide high-quality raw materials for the manufacture of Xuan paper. There are many rivers in Jing County, especially the two tributaries of the upper reaches of Wuxi River. One is slightly alkaline and suitable for raw material processing; the other is slightly acidic and suitable for papermaking. Xuan paper is made of celtis bark as the main material, and Shatian rice straw pulp is added in proportion. The entire production process consists of more than 140 processes. There are many varieties of Xuan paper. After 1949, new products such as "Zhang Er" and "Er Zhang" were successfully produced. Xuan paper is pure white and fine, with clear texture, soft and tough, unbreakable, shiny but not slippery, absorbs water and ink, is suitable for writing and painting, and is anti-corrosive and anti-moth, so it is known as "paper that lasts a thousand years" and "the king of paper". When Guo Moruo visited the Jingxian Xuan Paper Factory, he wrote an inscription saying: "Xuan paper is an artistic creation invented by the Chinese working people. Chinese calligraphy and painting cannot express the wonderful taste of art without it." The handmade and paper characteristics of Xuan paper reflect the strengths of traditional skills, which cannot be replaced by machines to this day. Since the Tang Dynasty, Xuan paper has been loved by the Chinese people. Its production reached its peak in the Qing Dynasty, and famous brands such as Wang Liuji and Wang Tonghe appeared, winning many awards at home and abroad. The Red Star brand Xuan paper produced by Xuan Paper Group Corporation is a well-known Chinese trademark and is exported to many parts of the world such as Japan.
