During the reign of Emperor Tianqi of the Ming Dynasty, Jiang Shaolin, a native of Gutian Town, Liancheng County, processed a large amount of bamboo produced locally into blue silk. After many experiments, he successfully trial-produced natural bleached handmade paper (i.e. bleached paper), thus creating the history of Xuan paper production in Liancheng. The Gutian Xuan paper production process includes four processes: blue silk production, steaming yellow blanks, natural bleaching, and papermaking. The process is complicated, and the level of delicacy and high requirements of each process are difficult to match in other paper production. With the continuous improvement of papermaking technology, the types of Xuan paper have developed into three categories (bleached paper, cooked paper, and raw paper) and 26 varieties.
