🎧  Listen to Introduction

Jinjiang drum music is folk music played in weddings and funerals. It is an art form formed by the unique understanding of life, society and nature that the working people comprehend and feel in their production and life. As a continuation of ancient culture, it has a positive effect on original folk music, understanding the history of national development, improving national taste and promoting friendship. [Era of Origin] Before liberation, the Dachong (along the river) area of Huidong belonged to Yunnan, and the source of Jinjiang drum music should be traced back to the time when Han music was introduced to Yunnan. According to historical records, Jinjiang drum music was generally introduced to Sichuan in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and has been circulated among the people of Huidong for hundreds of years. From a geographical point of view, the area along the river in Huidong is a must-go. "Huaping County Literature and History Materials? Second Series" said: "Dongjing music was introduced to Dali from Zitong County, Sichuan in the seventh year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty (1409). "Nanjian County Literature and History Materials? First Series" also said: "It was introduced to Dali from Zitong County, Sichuan in the seventh year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty, and then spread from Dali to various parts of Yunnan." The folk artists at that time combined the essence of the local folk music at that time, and after a long period of integration, gradually formed the folk music with the characteristics of the Huidong Dachong (along the river) area------Jinjiang drum music. [Distribution area] Jinjiang drum music is mainly distributed in the Jinsha River Basin, mainly in Luji District, Huidong County. Huidong County is located in the southwest of Sichuan Province. It is a mountainous agricultural county at the southernmost end of Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture. It is located between 10213103315 east longitude and 261214265542 north latitude. It covers an area of 3227.55 square kilometers. The county boundary line is uneven, mostly demarcated by mountains and rivers, and looks like a broad leaf. The county is surrounded by the Jinsha River in the southeast, and faces Qiaojia County, Dongchuan City, and Luquan County in Yunnan Province across the river. It is adjacent to Huili in the west and Ningnan in the north. There are 17 ethnic minorities distributed in Jinsha River, including Yi, Lisu, Buyi, Miao, Zhuang, Bai, Manchu, Dai, Tujia, Mongolian, Dong, Qiang and Mulao. At the end of 2007, the total population reached 385,900. Among them, the Han nationality is 353,300, accounting for 91.55% of the total population, and the Yi nationality is 27,000, accounting for 7.00% of the total population. [Basic content] Jinjiang drum music is a major feature of the ethnic culture on both sides of the Jinsha River. Before liberation, it was mostly used for weddings and funerals. After liberation, it was mostly used for celebrations and festivals. Its performance form is gongs, drums and suona. When playing, there are two drums, one big drum, a pair of big cymbals, a pair of small cards, two small gongs, a pair of suonas and a sea flute. When the gongs and drums start, the two suonas go up and down, separated and combined, and the small sea flute is inserted in it. There are fast and slow, ups and downs, joy and sorrow, magnificent momentum, and very pleasant to the ears. Its drum beats are mostly eighth note rhythms, with occasional sixteenth note and dotted rhythms. There is no standard measure division. Most of the music is composed of one or two phrases, with repetitions, but the coordination and division of labor between the instruments are regular. There are at least six to ten people in a drum band, sometimes solo and sometimes ensemble, so it sounds like a small folk music band. Due to the complex performance techniques and the influence of modern culture, Jinjiang drum music is rarely played by people in Huidong. The existing folk drum music players only exist as a kind of entertainment for festivals and weddings. Most young men and women go out to work or are influenced by modern pop music, and have no time to ask about the ancient Jinjiang drum music. Most of the folk artists who can play drum music are over 60 years old (according to incomplete statistics, the number is less than 10). As a result, Huidong Jinjiang drum music is on the verge of being lost and urgently needs to be protected and rescued. 【Basic Characteristics】Jinjiang drum music has a strong national and folk character, unique playing style, hollow and changeable melody, unconventional rhythm, and peculiar instrument matching. The phrases of drum music are mostly one sentence (one paragraph) or two sentences (two paragraphs), which are played repeatedly. Among them, the suona goes up and down, balancing the harmony of the music with space and direction, and the timbre is bright and high-pitched. The hall drum is in the middle, and there are two bass suonas on both sides. The big gong has a thick timbre and plays a role in setting the melody with the hall drum. The high-pitched suona plays in the high octave of the bass suona. The horse gong and the hook gong enrich the musical texture. The small fork is crisp and bright, and the timbre is long-lasting. The hall drum is the skeleton of the music melody and is used to set the rhythm. The big gong and the beating stick cooperate with each other, making the music sometimes long-lasting and sometimes urgent. 【Basic Value】As a folk drum music in an original ecological form, Jinjiang drum music has irreplaceable reference value for the development and protection of original ecological music and the research of Chinese folk music. Jinjiang drum music has a unique regionality. It is different from other drum music. It is a combination of the two regional cultures of Sichuan and Yunnan, and is a living fossil of the local primitive music culture. Jinjiang drum music has evolved since ancient times. In the minds of local working people, its status is no longer just a kind of music. It reflects the working people's outlook on life, values, production and life, and their infinite confession of the spiritual world. The protection and inheritance of Jinjiang drum music has a very high aesthetic value of ancient national folk art. Jinjiang drum music has been endowed with new forms and contents due to the special experience of ethnic migration. Jinjiang drum music has not only had a positive impact on promoting national culture and enriching the cultural life of the masses, but also has an irreplaceable role in strengthening social stability, combining education with entertainment, and inspiring thinking. It is of great significance to inherit the achievements of human civilization, develop new national culture, educate and cultivate the next generation to inherit the excellent cultural achievements of mankind, make use of the past for the present, keep pace with the times, and build a harmonious society.
