The Yi people are one of the ancient ethnic groups in China. In the long historical process, the Yi people have created a brilliant culture that is worthy of mankind. The traditional costumes of the Yi people are both material and spiritual wealth, and are an important part of the Yi culture. The Yi people in Dayao County mainly include six branches, namely "Luoluo Pu", "Laluoba", "Li Pu", "Ma Chi Pu", "Ge Su Pu" and "Po Pei", as well as other names such as Bai Yi, Gaoshan, Tu and Shuitian. Among them, the languages of the three branches of Luoluo Pu, Laluoba and Po Pei belong to the Luoluo Pu dialect of the central dialect of Yi language, and the languages of Li Pu, Ma Chi Pu and Ge Su Pu belong to the Li Pu dialect. There are Yi populations in all 12 towns in the county, among which Santai, Zhaojiadian, Guihua, Liuju, Tiesuo, Longjie and Tanhua are the settlement areas. In terms of dialect distribution, the Yi people who speak the Luoluo Pu dialect mainly live in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas in the northwest of the county; the Yi people who speak the Li Pu dialect are mainly distributed in the mountainous areas of the Qinglong River and Yipao River basins.
