🎧  Listen to Introduction

Ankang Daoqing belongs to the Southern Shaanxi School, one of the four major schools of Shaanxi Daoqing. It is mainly based on shadow puppetry and has an authentic style. It was extremely prosperous during the Xianfeng and Guangxu years of the Qing Dynasty. Its music is melodious and delicate, suitable for lyricism. The main string cowhide string has a soft tone, and it is accompanied by flutes and fishing drums, and the timbre is unique and moving. There are many tunes and boards, and the board styles include Erliu, Anban, Daiban, Xingban, Jinban, Yaozi and Gunbai. Various board styles are also divided into hard and soft tones, hard tones are cheerful, and soft tones are sad. The repertoire is also very rich, with about 1,200. Ankang Daoqing is an intangible cultural heritage protection project in Shaanxi Province. It was formed in Hanbin District, Ankang City, Shaanxi Province during the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. The "Shaanxi Volume of the Chinese Opera Records" (compiled by the "Shaanxi Volume of the Chinese Opera Records" Committee in 1983) records Ankang Daoqing in the chronology (1810, the 15th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty). Hanbin District has a shadow puppet artist Li Jiuxiang who is famous in southern Shaanxi. Later, Li Rongfu (known as "Sai Jiuxiang") collected more than 90 handwritten Daoqing plays during the Jiaqing period, including "Wangfu Mountain", "Zhaowang Village", "Zhan Zhanghe" (Shaanxi Daily, December 8, 1956). The investigation data of the Hanbin District Opera Excavation Group showed that Ankang Daoqing flourished during the Xianfeng and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty, and there were more than 30 troupes within a radius of 100 miles. According to the inheritors of Ankang Daoqing (shadow play) Xu Yuanzhao, Yang Sheng, Yang Tianchang, Pan Xiangshun and other old artists, during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, there was a businessman named Lai Shikui in Hengkou Town, Hanbin District, Ankang. He often went out of Guanzhong to sell goods and was fond of opera. He also learned to play leather strings, beat fishermen's drums, and play shadow puppets in the Xi'an Wanwanqiang Shadow Play Troupe. After returning to Ankang, he organized a class and combined the local customs and local music of Ankang. In the long-term practice, he formed a unique art of Ankang Daoqing, which is different from Qinqiang with special musical instrument accompaniment, singing method, board structure, melody direction, etc., and performed it among the people in Hanbin District, and then gradually radiated to the surrounding areas. Compared with Qinqiang music, Ankang Daoqing music has dissolved many Qinqiang flavors, for example: the singing styles of "daiban", "jianban" and "gunbai" are similar to Qinqiang; the board names such as "anban" and "erliu" are similar to those of Qinqiang; the instruments used in the martial arts scene such as "baogu (bangu)", "tanggu", "daoluo", "cymbals", "xiaoluo" and "bangzi" are exactly the same as Qinqiang. The script, word style and rhyme of Qinqiang are suitable for Ankang Daoqing. To be precise, Ankang Daoqing music contains the flavor of Qinqiang. From the perspective of historical development, there are many immigrants in Ankang. Immigrants and local people have lived together for a long time. Their language, culture, economy, customs, habits, etc. have been borrowed and infiltrated from each other, and gradually evolved into a new style. It is also obvious that Ankang Daoqing has absorbed many southern and northern accents. For example, a "Huagu tune" is inserted into the festive scene in the play, a "Bacha tune" tune is used, and sister arts such as the Han tune Erhuang tune "Da Kaimen" and "Xiao Kaimen" are borrowed. However, in terms of style and charm, they are integrated with Ankang Daoqing music. Ankang Daoqing uses cowhide to carve shadows for performance. The performers are skilled, the division of labor is clear, the venue is small, and it is simple and easy. Sheng, Dan, Jing, Mo, Chou, all the professions are complete. The class is generally composed of six people, and four people can also perform. The so-called "five tight, six slow, seven quiet" shows that the number of participants is flexible, and six to seven people are the best. In terms of the performance venue, the size is not much particular, about more than ten square meters is enough. The singing style of Ankang Daoqing belongs to the variation of banqiang. There are 11 banqiang styles in the hard-type and 12 banqiang styles in the soft-type. There are 48 silk string tunes, 17 suona tunes, 26 action gongs and drums in percussion, 4 starting gongs and drums, and 11 other gongs and drums for fighting and martial arts competition. The language is based on the dialect of Ankang City, and is exaggerated in personification and drama according to different professions. There are rhymed and scattered lines in the dialogue. There are 10 kinds of percussion instruments for civil and military scenes. Ankang Daoqing is an art form with distinctive characteristics of Ankang. It is formed by artists integrating Ankang's local culture on the basis of learning and drawing on the art of Guanzhong Qinqiang. Therefore, the singing style of Ankang Daoqing is both high-pitched and passionate, and delicate and euphemistic. Accompanied by instruments such as leather strings and fishing drums, Ankang Daoqing is unique and leading, forming the unique opera art of Ankang Daoqing. In Ankang City, for hundreds of years, in the relatively poor material and cultural life of the people, Ankang Daoqing has always played an important role. When there are major events such as weddings, funerals, celebrations, etc., the masses always invite shadow puppet troupes to perform. Therefore, Ankang Daoqing has a deep mass base in the local area. It has become an intangible cultural heritage protection project in Shaanxi Province. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
