🎧  Listen to Introduction

Zhen'an Yugu is an ancient Han Chinese rap art, a branch of Daoqing, which is widely spread in Zhen'an County, Shaanxi Province, and is one of the first batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage representative projects in Shaanxi Province. Zhen'an County is located in the middle section of the southern foot of the Qinling Mountains. Its remote geographical location has preserved the traditional art and characteristic operas here intact. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Yugu was introduced to Zhen'an, Shaanxi by immigrants from Huguang, and was integrated with local folk music such as Huagu Xiaodiao and Daoqing Opera, gradually forming the unique Han Chinese opera "Zhen'an Yugu". Yugu is also one of the earliest popular folk instruments in Zhen'an. Many local folk artists carry Yugu and sing from door to door for a living. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, Zhen'an Yugu, a traditional folk performing art form, was widely spread and loved by more people. According to the "Zhen'an County Chronicles", Zhen'an Yugu originated from Heiyaogou, Yungai Temple Town, and was mainly popular in the "Xiahe People" in the western part of Zhen'an County. It has a history of more than 400 years. Since Zhen'an Yugu was included in the first batch of Shaanxi Province's intangible cultural heritage protection list, Zhen'an County has successively created Yugu repertoires such as "Yugu Yangge", "Lixiang Drum Rhyme", and "Azalea Blossoms". The performance forms of Zhen'an Yugu are divided into two types: sitting and standing. The singer holds the Yugu and plays the simple board (tooth) and small cymbals, commonly known as "three rings". Common tunes include [Kaiqiang] and [Liushui]. The lyrics are basically seven-character sentences, and [Kaiqiang] is a four-sentence form, which is used at the beginning of all tracks. Its fixed lyrics are: "Yugu was originally a bamboo, born in Zhongnan Mountain, Lu Ban cut it and made it into a drum, and the Hu family held the drum and traveled to Jiuzhou." The text is followed by the upper and lower sentences. In the early years, Zhen'an Yugu, with its ancient and unique artistic charm, made up for the backward phenomenon of the lack of folk cultural life and met the spiritual and cultural needs of the masses. It is still deeply loved by people. It is also one of the important materials for the music creation of the local opera "Zhen'an Huagu". In 1983, when Xi'an Film Studio was shooting "Wild Mountain", it was used as the background music at the end of the film. It is desolate and simple, deeply touching, and has immeasurable potential value for the prosperity and development of local cultural and artistic undertakings. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
