"Pingqiao Dragon Playing" is a traditional folk activity in the western area of Wulong. It is very common during the Spring Festival every year. From the market town to some large villages, after the dragon comes out on the ninth day of the first lunar month, the dragon will be played every night, attracting many people to watch. The dragon playing activity will not stop until the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, after the "dragon sends the New Year". Pingqiao Town is located in the Pingchuan Valley on both sides of the Daxi River and Xiangxi Valley. The land is fertile and the production is rich. Since ancient times, the people living here have often suffered from flooding of crops and farmland due to continuous rainfall in the summer and autumn seasons every year. The people believe that it is the "evil dragon" in the world that is causing harm. Legend has it that the "evil dragon" was the crutch of the goddess Nuwa in the sky a long time ago. Later, it secretly came to the world and became a "dragon spirit" that did all kinds of evil. It not only brought "plagues" such as warmth, humidity, heat, and deficiency to the people, but also caused floods to harm crops and farmland. After knowing this, Nuwa came to the human world to subdue the "evil dragon" and eliminate the plague and disaster for the people. Therefore, from ancient times to the present, the people in Pingqiao area have the custom of playing with dragons to eliminate the plague, which symbolizes using "real dragons" to drive away the "evil dragons", praying for peace in the world, and praying for good weather and good harvests every year. Especially from the ninth to the fifteenth day of the first lunar month every year, the activity of playing with dragons is more common. While playing "playing with dragons", Pingqiao people also have the custom of playing "bench dragons" and "grass dragons". When people are not busy in farming or get together, they use a high-legged bench as the "dragon body", with one or more legs. The "dragon" dancers hold up the bench legs and dance and play wantonly, adding interest to life. "Grass dragons" are mostly made of straw, divided into "dragon head" and "dragon tail" connected by straw ropes, and children dance and run on the field paths in autumn for fun. In addition, Pingqiao "female dragon" also has a long history. The so-called "female dragon" refers to the "dragon playing" played by young women. Many of them have high skills and can be compared with male dragon teams. It can be regarded as a beautiful scenery of folk customs activities in the western area of Wulong. In 2014, it was included in the fourth batch of representative projects of Chongqing's intangible cultural heritage. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
