Ninghai dragon dance mainly uses nine-section cloth dragon, and there are also eighteen-section dragon and thirteen-section dragon. The number of performers depends on the number of sections of the cloth dragon. The cloth dragon has a vivid shape, small and agile body, and the performers have high skills in dragon dancing, high difficulty, fast speed, and rich and varied movements. The whole dance movement includes coiling, rolling, swimming, flipping, jumping, and playing. The main routines include hitting four corners, hitting eight gates, hitting earth piles, hitting sixteen piles, etc. During the performance, the dragon head hand is the conductor, and the movements change with the changes of the dragon head, coordinated and unified, and connected from top to bottom. The costumes of dragon dance performers are generally wrapped in towels, wearing farmers' lining shirts, heavy pants or tight-fitting bloomers, leggings, and straw sandals. Dragon dance props used to use straw dragons at first, mainly for teenagers to dance, and the movements were relatively simple. Later, for the sake of beauty, the straw dragon was changed to a cloth dragon, and the skills were also enriched. The time for dragon dance performances is mainly concentrated around the Spring Festival every year to celebrate a good harvest and pray for good luck and wealth. Dragon dance performances are usually held in spacious places such as ancestral halls, temples, and courtyards. The musical accompaniment of dragon dances usually uses national percussion instruments, and the commonly used gong and drum tunes include "Wumianluo", "Sanwuqi", "Yangliuqing", etc., which are played freely. In order to match the improvisational performance, the rhythm is accelerated with the changes in movements and formations. The tune is popular and smooth, and the atmosphere is warm and unrestrained.
