Gaoqiao Yangge, also known as "stilts", is a folk dance widely spread across the country. It is named because the feet are often stepped on wooden stilts during the dance. Stilts have a long history and originated from a technical performance in ancient acrobatics. There were stone carvings of people walking on stilts in the Northern Wei Dynasty. Stilts are generally performed in the form of a dance team, with dozens of people ranging from dozens to dozens of people. Most dancers play the roles of some ancient myths or historical stories, and their costumes are mostly imitated from opera costumes. Common props include fans, handkerchiefs, wooden sticks, swords and guns, etc. There are two forms of performance: "walking on the street" and "dropping the stage". Dropping the stage has two forms: "big stage" where the dance team dances and walks in various formations and patterns, and "small stage" where two or three people perform. There are many male and female dances between roles, and sometimes they sing while dancing. The wooden stilts used in stilts in various places range from 30 cm to 300 cm, with different heights. From the performance style, they are divided into "civil stilts" and "martial stilts". Civil stilts focus on twisting and stepping and plot performance; martial stilts focus on showing off skills. Shangkouzi Gaoqiao Yangge, which has a history of more than 300 years, was listed as a provincial intangible cultural heritage protection project by the provincial government in June 2006. In order to ensure the permanent inheritance of this excellent folk traditional culture and art, the cultural authorities at the municipal and county levels and the Xi'an Town Committee and Town Government attached great importance to it and invested nearly 60,000 yuan to build an art base house and square of about 400 square meters. The renovated art base is fully functional, with a computer data room, rehearsal hall, and clothing and equipment storage room. The completion of this art base not only laid a solid foundation for the inheritance of Shangkouzi Gaoqiao Yangge, but also became a highlight of the city's folk cultural work.
