Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is located in Xijiang Town, at the foot of Leigong Mountain and the bank of Baishui River in the northeast of Leishan County, Guizhou Province. It includes four administrative villages, Pingzhai, Dongyin, Yangpai and Nangui, and 10 natural villages. The residential buildings here are wooden structures, without a single nail or rivet. The house frame is connected by mortise and tenon joints and is built according to the mountain terrain. The architectural style is unique, forming a unique Miao village stilt house landscape. The construction skills of the stilt houses in Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village are inherited from the stilt houses of the "Nesting Houses of the Southerners" in the Hemudu culture 7,000 years ago, and have been changed in accordance with the requirements of the living environment during the historical evolution. The house builders in Xijiang determine the corresponding house building plan according to the terrain and the needs of the owner, and use axes, chisels, saws, planes, ink fountains and ink lines to build stilt houses on steep slopes of 30 to 70 degrees. This type of building is mainly based on a through-beam wooden frame, and is named because the front eaves columns are suspended. The stilt houses generally have three floors, with four frames and three rooms, five frames and four rooms, and six frames and five rooms. They are scattered along the mountain and are in a row. The stilt houses have the advantages of being simple, stable, and moisture-proof, and can also save arable land and building materials. The stilt houses in Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, together with related construction customs, have formed the Miao stilt house architectural culture, which is of extremely precious value for the study of the social civilization process and architectural science of the Xijiang Miao people. With the development of society and the change of people's living concepts, local young people in Xijiang are no longer willing to live in stilt houses, nor are they interested in learning related construction skills, and there is a lack of successors for stilt house construction craftsmen. The construction of stilt houses has certain requirements for geology and wood, and the task of preventing landslides and fires after completion is heavy. Therefore, the continuation of the architectural skills and culture of the stilt houses in Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village and the physical protection are facing extremely severe challenges, which require the attention and support of relevant parties.
