Guizhou
🎧  Listen to Introduction

There are Lushengs in every village in the Miao-inhabited area of Leishan County, Guizhou Province, which is an important place for Lusheng production. Lusheng craftsmen live in Paika Village in Danjiang Town, Leishan County, Pingxiang Village and Queniao Village in Fangxiang Township, Taoliang Village and Nianxie Village in Taojiang Township. These villages are all located in the mountains and transportation is extremely inconvenient. In addition to knowing certain music theory knowledge, making Lushengs also requires physical knowledge and understanding of mechanical principles. There are many types of Lushengs, each with different sound quality and different shapes and sizes. To make Lushengs that meet the needs, the craftsmen must first have long-term production experience. The Miao masters who inherit the Lusheng making skills can make various exquisite and practical Lushengs with only bellows, hammers, brass, axes, chisels, saws, drills, bitter bamboo, tung oil and lime (some have been replaced with latex). The Lushengs made in the Leishan area have pure sound quality and a smooth and beautiful appearance, which is very famous. The Lusheng is a symbol of Miao culture. The Miao Lusheng combines lyrics, music and dance in performance, preserving the originality and simplicity of Miao history, culture and art. The Lusheng making skills have always been taught by masters themselves, with no written materials left. The skills are sophisticated and difficult to pass on.
