🎧  Listen to Introduction

Lusheng dance is a traditional folk dance performed by the Miao people during ancestor worship, festivals and festive activities. It originated from the ritual dance of praying for a good harvest before sowing in ancient times, thanking the gods for the gifts and worshiping ancestors after the harvest. It is widely popular in the Miao area. Among them, the Miao Lusheng dance in Guizhou is mainly distributed in Leishan, Guanling, Rongjiang, Shuicheng and other places. The atmosphere of Lusheng dance is warm and cheerful. It has now become a spontaneous dance performed by the Miao people during the slack season after the rice harvest and before the spring sowing of the next year and during festive occasions. The dance music and dance steps of Lusheng dance are similar in different places. Lusheng dance music can be divided into ritual music, narrative music, march, song and dance music according to the content. Lusheng dance has several forms: playing with the sheng as an accompaniment, playing with the sheng as the leader and playing with the sheng as the solo dancer. In the two forms of playing with the sheng as the accompaniment and playing with the sheng as the leader, there can be 7, 9, 11 or more people playing the sheng. The sheng player does not dance or dances a little on the spot. The surrounding men and women dance around in layers, and the scene is spectacular. The movements of Lusheng dance can be summarized as walking, moving, crossing, turning, standing, kicking, parting, hooking, and flipping. These movements are either solemn and solemn, or lively and compact, or bright and free, or light and agile, reflecting the diverse life and cultural forms of the Miao people. The Leishan Miao Lusheng dance has different dance postures due to different festival contents. Each dance posture contains certain content. The performance is beautiful, natural, harmonious and round, with distinct regional characteristics. The Guanling Miao Lusheng dance was gradually formed in the long-term farming and hunting life. It contains a large number of primitive farming culture sacrificial rituals and carries many important historical and cultural information and primitive memories of the Miao people. The Wai Shu Miao branch of the Western Dialect Miao performs this dance every year in the "Roaming Slope" activity. The Lusheng dance of the Gunzhong Miao people is centered in Gunzhong Miao Village and is distributed in parts of the towns of Bakai, Leli, Pingyong, Tashi, and Xinghua in Rongjiang County, Guizhou. There are many types of Lusheng and tunes in the performance, with high-pitched and clear timbre, enthusiastic and cheerful movements of men, and graceful and light movements of women, which is unique among the Lusheng dances of the Miao people in Guizhou. The Lusheng dance of the Shuicheng Miao people, also known as the "Jingji Dance", is a collective competitive dance performed by Miao compatriots at gatherings. It originated from the experience of the Miao "old genealogy" in national struggles and production life. The dance performed by the Lusheng players of the Xiaohua Miao branch in Nankai Township, Shuicheng County is the most representative. At present, this unique form of ethnic folk dance is facing the dilemma of lack of successors and being on the verge of extinction, and it is in urgent need of rescue and protection.
