🎧  Listen to Introduction

"Singing Flowers" is a unique song in Yong'an that combines folk storytelling with folk performances. Since it was formed in the late Ming Dynasty, "Singing Flowers" has a history of nearly 400 years. It is still being sung in Xinchong Village, Dahu Town, Yong'an City. The basic content of "Singing Flowers" is mostly through oral and personal teaching to farmers, spreading language, agricultural technology, ethics and historical common sense. It is also a living textbook for people to pass on agricultural production knowledge. It combines seasons with farming in a tangible way and becomes a basic reading material for farmers' farming knowledge. In the process of singing, a catchy, simple and easy-to-remember question-and-answer style is adopted. The props used in "Singing Flowers" are extremely simple: a handwritten "Singing Flowers" songbook, a medium drum with a diameter of about 35 cm, a portable lantern, and a square table can be used for performance. "Singing Flowers" in Xinchong Village, Dahu Town, Yong'an City, was originally a local folk storytelling drama inherited by the Zeng family in Xinchong. In the long river of history, the Zeng family of Xinchong gradually died out, and "Changhua" was gradually inherited and passed down by the Minnan immigrants who migrated to Xinchong. Because Minnan dialect and Yong'an dialect belong to two different language systems, Minnan people would be very stiff when learning to speak Yong'an dialect. Over time, they naturally formed the current unique "four-unique" singing style that is neither pure Mandarin nor rough Minnan dialect. "Changhua" is a product formed in this specific environment. Yong'an Xinchong "Changhua" has been passed down for five generations, with more than 500 books. The singing style has a strong local feature of Yong'an, and there are 24 extant tunes. Since 2000, Xinchong's "Changhua" has been invited by the city's cultural department to perform in the city many times.
