The Butterfly Festival is held on the 15th day of the fourth lunar month every year. It is said to be a folk festival to commemorate the steadfast love of the Bai youth Xia Lang and Wen Gu. According to legend, in ancient times, there lived a Bai family near the Butterfly Spring at the foot of Yunnong Peak in Cangshan Mountain, Dali. There were three people, a mother, a father and a daughter. The daughter was named Wen Gu, and the family made a living by collecting firewood. Wen Gu met Xia Lang, a Bai youth hunter from Yuju Peak, and fell in love with each other. Later, the hereditary lord of Yucheng, the King of Yu, admired Wen Gu's beauty and talent, killed Wen Gu's parents, and took her into the palace to be his concubine. Wen Gu resisted and was locked up in the palace. Xia Lang risked his life to enter the palace at midnight to rescue Wen Gu, and rode a young deer to escape to the Butterfly Spring. Later, the thugs of the King of Yu also chased to the Butterfly Spring. Xia Lang and Wen Zhan had no way to escape, so they hugged each other and jumped into the spring. Then a pair of colorful butterflies flew out of the spring and perched on the ancient tree of Albizia Julibrissin by the Butterfly Spring. Colorful butterflies from all directions flew to congratulate them, connecting head to tail and hanging down from the tree into the spring, forming a spectacle. This day was the 15th day of the fourth lunar month, and the surrounding Bai people came to watch, so there was an annual butterfly meeting. According to scientific workers, the gathering of butterflies is a natural phenomenon of biological reproduction in nature. Around the 15th day of the fourth lunar month every year, it is the season when the ancient tree of Albizia Julibrissin by the Butterfly Spring blooms and releases nectar, and it is also the time for various butterflies to reproduce. They fly from all over to collect nectar, and at the same time, males and females interact with each other, so this spectacle of butterfly gathering appears, and people give it beautiful and magical legends. Since the movie "Wu Duo Jin Hua" was filmed here, Butterfly Spring has become famous at home and abroad and has become a famous scenic spot. There are always tourists at ordinary times. During the Butterfly Meeting, there are tens of thousands of people of all ethnic groups attending the meeting, and Butterfly Spring has become a sea of people and a grand gathering of songs.
