Dai Butterfly Dance

Yunnan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Dai Butterfly Dance is performed by young girls wearing butterfly clothes and imitating the movements of butterflies on four low bamboo stools that represent flowers. They dance to the rhythm of the elephant-foot drums with light steps and graceful dance postures. The basic movements include "circling flowers", "smelling flowers", "flying away in surprise", etc., which vividly express the characteristics of butterflies. It is called "Ga Yao" in Dai language. It is said that the Butterfly Dance was created to create a new look in dance competitions. During the performance, the dancers tie butterfly-shaped props on their bodies to imitate the flying form of butterflies. Their movements and drum beats are similar to those of the Peacock Dance.
