"Lion" means power. In ancient times, stone lions were placed on both sides of the gatehouses of government offices, temple halls, and wealthy houses to show their power and influence. Lion dance gradually became popular with the meaning of warding off evil spirits. Liangzhou hemp lion dance, as the pioneer of domestic lion dance, was most popular in the Tang Dynasty. Lion dance was performed to entertain court banquets and celebrations. The poem "Xiliang Ji" by the Tang Dynasty poet Bai Juyi has already described the wonderful Liangzhou hemp lion dance vividly. From the perspective of Liangzhou lion dance, two people together are "Tai Shi", and one person alone is "Shao Shi". The production process of "lion" is also unique - "hemp" lion. The lion body is first made of wild hemp skin and made into "Hezi cloth" by hand as the "skin", and then the hemp skin is dyed into golden yellow, brown, green, etc. according to the length requirements. After careful combing, it is made into very fine silk to serve as "hair", and then poked, pulled, drawn, and planted on the "skin". When dancing, the lion's hair moves with the wind and flows naturally, showing the lion's majesty. During the performance, many young men from martial arts families first practiced the unique martial arts routines such as the Eight-Step Turn, Pipa Tiaozi, and Dingsong Broadsword, which were popular in Liangzhou. Then, with the sound of cheering firecrackers and the lion dance drum beats of varying weights and speeds, the lion-leader, wearing red and colorful clothes, held a hydrangea in his hand, and tumbled and fell, leading the lion to appear with his head held high. The lion suddenly looked up, bared its teeth and claws, suddenly lowered its head and looked back, shook its mane and rushed, and suddenly looked back and crawled, tumbled and played. Occasionally, there were vivid movements such as licking hair, moving eyes, wiping feet, shaking body, and washing ears. Standing or lying, hopping or holding, just a realistic and cute "open crotch birth" was enough to attract applause from the audience. The lion dance performance is wonderful and thrilling. In addition to "rolling wood to push the mill", "dragon fetching water", "explosion and spitting fire", and "rolling embroidered balls", the "high platform" lion dance is the most exciting. Before the performance, a tower-shaped platform of about 10 meters is built with specially made long benches. The lion dancers go up step by step, dancing while they are on the stage. Under the guidance of the embroidered balls, they sometimes jump, sometimes climb, sometimes lie down, and sometimes flip to perform thrilling movements in various acrobatic performances. Especially at the top of the tower, it is extremely thrilling and exciting. At this time, the dancers are naturally very cautious. Under the command of the slow and fast drums, they perform various difficult movements, achieving a high degree of unity of the changes of hands, eyes, feet and body movements, supplemented by the clear sound of gongs and cymbals. The whole scene is warm and spectacular. If there are multiple lion dance teams performing, the civilized Liangzhou lion dancers will take the initiative to be humble, either letting the smaller team perform first, or taking turns to perform in the order of arrival and cheering each other. The dazzling image of the Liangzhou lion dance, the gold- and silver-plated makeup, and the thunderous and overwhelming momentum, as well as the meaning of driving away plague and wishing good health, all reflect the great wisdom of the ancient Liangzhou people and their yearning for a better life.
