🎧  Listen to Introduction

The big-wheeled cart has been the main tool for agricultural transportation throughout the ages, as well as for transporting people and goods, short and long distances. The big-wheeled cart is well-known for its large wheels, reasonable structure, sturdiness, practicality, and economy, and has become a major feature of Gaotai. According to historical records, as early as more than 2,000 years ago, there were traces of big-wheeled carts in Gaotai. It was not until the early 1980s that the big-wheeled carts were replaced by modern machinery such as hand tractors and small tricycles. Today, the big-wheeled cart has gradually disappeared from people's sight and memory, and the craftsmanship of making big-wheeled carts is also facing the risk of being lost. Gaotai's big-wheeled cart is mainly composed of axles, cart boxes, big wheels, and related supporting parts such as hooks, yokes, and heads. The production process consists of a complete set of relevant data and process standards. For example, "the shaft is 18 feet long, and can accommodate large and small cows." The width of the cart is 6 feet 4, and the big wheel is 6 feet 3 high. The wheel is made of 2 hubs, 9 rims for each wheel, and 18 spokes. Each spoke is 23 to 26 centimeters wide and 10 to 13 centimeters thick. The materials used in the production of the main components are exquisite. The shaft, spokes, head, and yoke are made of elm, the rims are made of willow, and the box panels are made of poplar. At present, the craftsmanship of making big-wheeled carts has been announced by the Gaotai County People's Government and the Zhangye Municipal People's Government as an intangible cultural heritage protection list project. Duan Guangrong, a 61-year-old farmer from Hequan Village, Heiquan Township, Gaotai County, a folk woodworker, "restored" many small-scale crafts such as big-wheeled carts, plows, rakes, harrows, baskets, spinning wheels, looms, etc. in a 1:10 ratio. More than 10 sets, nearly 100 pieces, have been sold, and they are deeply loved by collectors.
