Gaotai folk embroidery, commonly known as "Zhahua" and "Xiuhua", is a traditional folk handicraft with a long history in this county since the Han, Wei and Jin Dynasties. Gaotai folk embroidery is well-made, ingeniously conceived, lifelike, lively, and expresses good wishes and festive and auspicious connotations. Gaotai folk embroidery has unique patterns and a wide variety. There are pillows, shawls, sachets, embroidered hats, embroidered shoes, socks, needle bags, bellybands, table skirts, pockets, sheets, bedspreads, aprons, scarves, cheongsams, shrouds, etc. It is also used in temples and Buddhist halls - embroidered images, Bodhisattva dragon tents, Baogai Guangchuan and costumes. Its techniques include flat embroidery, lock embroidery, row embroidery, interlaced embroidery, pick embroidery, set embroidery, net embroidery, etc. In order to make the embroidery products bright and beautiful, and dazzling, there are often some auxiliary processes such as cutting velvet, locking edges, circling gold, piercing silver, needlework, and punching. The embroidery is rich in content and takes a wide range of materials, including flowers, plants, birds and animals, auspicious characters, portraits, mountains and rivers, pavilions, folk legends, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and gods in heaven. The inheritors of Gaotai folk embroidery are mainly Zhang Guilan, Bai Fengying, Li Yushan, Zhao Ying, etc. Zhao Ying, a 20-year-old farm girl, created works such as "Images of 56 Nationalities". The needlework is delicate, the colors are bright, the shapes are vivid and natural, the costumes are exquisite, the cultural connotations are rich, and it has a high artistic level and collection value. Gaotai folk embroidery has now been announced as the first batch of intangible cultural heritage protection projects in Gaotai County and the second batch of intangible cultural heritage protection projects in Zhangye City.
