The Ten Thousand People Pulling Rope in Lintan, Gansu has a history of at least 600 years. Chengguan Town, Lintan County, commonly known as the "Old Town of Taozhou", is located in the southeast of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Gansu Province, at the bend of the upper reaches of the Tao River. In ancient times, it was a physical strengthening game of the Ming Dynasty stationed in Lintao, ancient Taozhou. According to the Records of Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty, "In the first month of spring in the 12th year of Hongwu (1379 AD), eighteen tribes in Taozhou (Lintan) rebelled, and Mu Ying was ordered to move troops to deal with the rebellion. The British army arrived at the old city of Taozhou. Most of the soldiers of the British army were from Jianghuai." In the Records of Feng's Hearings and Sights by Feng Yan of the Tang Dynasty, it is said that "the custom of pulling the hook to Xianghan is often done on the fifteenth day of the first month of the lunar month. It is said that the general of Chu attacked Wu and used this to teach war." The rope pulling here originated from the "teaching war" activities in the army. At that time, when General Mu Ying was stationed in the old city, he used "pulling the hook" (i.e. tug of war) as a military game in the local area to enhance the physical strength of the soldiers. Later, the Ming Dynasty implemented the practice of garrisoning the border. According to the Records of the Taozhou Hall, "those who followed the expedition, the soldiers under the command of the generals, valued their land. Therefore, they stayed to guard the border." Many people settled in Taozhou, and the custom of pulling the rope was transferred from the army to the people, which is the historical source of the ancient hook pulling that has been passed down in Lintan County. Later, people regarded rope-pulling as a symbol of "predicting the harvest of the year" (Taozhou Hall Chronicle), which not only encouraged people to actively participate in rope-pulling, but also reflected the people of all ethnic groups' desire for ample food and clothing, peace and prosperity, national unity, and a peaceful and prosperous life. Ancient activity forms: According to the "Taozhou Hall Records", the "Ten Thousand People Rope Pulling" competition in Lintan County is "using a long rope, connecting dozens of small ropes, and thousands of people pulling the two ends, and pulling them in groups. The custom is to make two ropes on the river beach outside the west gate, dozens of feet long, and hang a small rope on the end of the big rope, divided into upper and lower strands, and pull them with two hooks. The young and the strong will lead and pull them hard. The old and the young will watch, and the noise can shake the mountains. With the west city gate as the boundary, the upper and lower parts will pull together. Those who live in the upper part will pull the upper part; those who live in the lower part will pull the lower part. The winner cheers enthusiastically; the loser is also quite disappointed. It is said that the victory or defeat of the rope pulling is used to predict the harvest of the year." The form of the "Ten Thousand People Rope Pulling Competition" has gradually formed a fixed form and content in the course of history, and it is a folk sports activity participated by the whole people. Participants are of all ages, regardless of gender, nationality, or region. In the afternoon, the organizers put the "rope" (a steel cable with a diameter of 5 cm, a total length of more than 1,100 meters and a weight of 8 tons) that had been prepared long ago in the middle of Yizi Street according to the old custom. The "young and strong" recommended by everyone will be the "joint hands" responsible for the victory or defeat of each game, and connect the "dragon head" (i.e. the rope head) with the other party. Before the game, each team will tie the rope into the first, second, third and tail (commonly known as double flying swallows), and the total length of the rope is more than 1,100 meters. At the beginning of the game, the contestants rushed up and pulled the rope at both ends. Both sides joined hands to string the wooden wedge in the middle of the dragon head, and started the competition with the firing of a cannon.
