🎧  Listen to Introduction

Hunan opera is the most important local opera in Hunan Province. It is popular in 17 counties and cities in the eastern part of southern Hunan, as well as Pingshi, Qimen, Lechang, Guitou, Lishi, Shaoguan and other places in the western part of southern Jiangxi and Guangdong. Because it used to be centered in Changsha and Xiangtan, it is also called Changsha Hunan opera. Hunan opera integrates many kinds of vocal styles such as Kunqu, Gaoqiang, Danqiang and Zaqu Xiaodiao. From the early Ming Dynasty to the Jiajing period, Kunqu and Yiyangqiang introduced into Hunan were combined with local dialects and folk music to form Hunan opera. Hengyang Hunan opera has a wide range of repertoires, including 6 continuous plays, 113 full plays, and 465 scattered plays. "The Investiture of the Gods", "The Biography of Yue Fei", "The Biography of Mulian", "The Golden Seal", "The Notes of Throwing", "The White Rabbit", "The Moon Worship", "Four Scholars", "Qi Shuang Hui" and other representative repertoires. The roles of Hunan opera are divided into 12 roles, including Dakaoba, Erkaoba, Changgong, Xiaosheng, Dahualian, Erhualian, Zilian, Sanhualian, Zhengdan, Zuogongdan, etc. Xiaosheng is divided into Wenjin, Luomao, Pheasant Wei, Mangkao, and there are four styles: poor, literary, rich, and martial. Hunan opera performances fully absorb the artistic elements of Kunqu opera, singing and dancing, lively and agile, and there are a number of plays famous for their shapes and skills. In the performance of Sheng, the "slippers road" of walking forward, the "boat road" of standing alone, the "drunk road" of staggering, and the "big-footed woman road" in the Dan line all have distinct characteristics of the opera. Hunan opera has more than 300 tunes, mainly southern tunes. In addition to the southern and northern routes, there are also anti-southern routes, anti-northern routes, flat plates, Anqing tunes, and seven hammers and a half. The accompaniment of Xiang opera is suona and flute. The accompaniment of Xiang opera is divided into civil and military scenes. The civil scene uses orchestral instruments such as erxian, yueqin, flute, suona to match the singing, while the martial scene uses percussion instruments such as drum board, cymbals, large and small gongs to set off the performance. After hundreds of years of artistic practice, Hengyang Xiang opera has become an independent opera genre in Hunan. Tan Baocheng is the founder of the Tan School of Hengyang Xiang opera performance art. His performance is deeply influenced by Kunqu art, vigorous, elegant and unique. In October 1952, he starred in "Drunken Beating the Mountain Gate" in the first national opera viewing performance, which was highly praised by Mao Zedong, 1 and other party and state leaders and famous performing artists such as Mei Lanfang. Kunqu created Hengyang Xiang opera. Hengyang Xiang opera regards Kunqu as its soul, and at the same time combines the elegant Kunqu art with regional culture, reaching a realm of appreciation by both the refined and the popular. This practice of localizing and localizing foreign elegant art has important value in the study of opera history and even art history. At present, due to the impact of modern culture, the relationship between Xiang Opera and the audience is becoming increasingly weak. Coupled with the lack of funds and the loss of talent, the survival of Xiang Opera is facing a severe situation, which deserves the attention of relevant parties.
