Baojing County, located in the central part of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Hunan Province, at the eastern end of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the middle section of the Wuling Mountains, is known as the "City of Pottery and Magnesium". The rich purple clay, magnesium porcelain clay (black clay), kaolin clay, pyrophyllite, silica, wollastonite, feldspar and other ceramic resources in the territory provide unique conditions for the development of ceramic crafts in our county. The ceramic industry has developed into one of the pillar industries of our county's economy. Mainly distributed in Qianling Town, Wanmipo Town, Fuxing Town, Bier Town, Yezhuping Town, Datuo Town, Qingshuiping Town, Maogou Town, Hulu Town, Longshan County, Guzhang County and other surrounding counties and cities in Baojing County, which belong to the eastern end of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau and the middle section of the Wuling Mountains. Earthenware is one of the indispensable utensils and materials in human life and production, and people's daily life is inextricably linked to ceramics. The sand-tempered brown pottery, sand-tempered white pottery, clay gray pottery, clay brown pottery, and clay red pottery fragments unearthed from the Paleolithic cultural site in Bamao Township (now Dongluo Village, Wanmipo Town) of our county have rope patterns, checkered patterns, incised patterns, additional pile patterns, string patterns, and hollow holes. The shapes include large-mouthed jars, tripods, beans, cans, and lace-rimmed basins. It is verified that the production technology of ceramic utensils has a history of more than 10,000 years in our county. When you open the cupboard of the Tujia people, you will often find a double-linked jar or a triple-linked jar, with a semicircular ear in the middle connecting two or three small jars. From the technique of this convenient and beautiful ear-linked jar, it can be seen that the pottery craftsmanship of the Tujia people is unique. Other ceramic products commonly used and fired by people include: jars, basins, bowls, lampstands, incense burners, high-footed wine jars, steamers, boiling pots, vases, pots, water jugs, wine bottles, flower bowls, and other utensils. The production process of earthenware adopts the most primitive and ancient traditional hand-made method. From material selection, balling, preservation, grouting, glazing, coloring, polishing, to the final firing, finished product storage, etc., each link is manually operated. Therefore, the inheritance and development of earthenware craftsmanship reflects important historical value, economic value, practical value, and health value.
