Drum Song

🎧  Listen to Introduction

Gupen Song is a very ancient form of folk art. It originated from the folk custom of "beating a basin as a drum and singing to accompany the bereaved family" at ancient funerals in my country. Therefore, it is also commonly known as "funeral drum", "funeral drum song" and "beating drum to make a fuss". The specific time of its formation cannot be confirmed. Gupen Song is popular in Shashi, Jingzhou and Jiangling in the Jianghan Plain. Its performance form is usually one or two people singing solo or duet by beating the drum board. During folk performances, enthusiastic audiences can also join in the singing, that is, singing together at the beginning and end of each paragraph of lyrics. There is also a solo singing without accompaniment. The singing styles of Gupen Song include [Pingban], [Knock Board], [Sanjuban] and [Huqiang], etc. The accompaniment of drums in the performance is unique. Its rhythm has a strong beat without stress at the end of the upper and lower sentences of the music, which is contrary to the common sense of music rhythm and is relatively rare in the history of Chinese and foreign music. Since the performance of Gupen Song is closely related to folk customs, it has multiple values in folklore, sociology and culture in addition to its artistic value. Today, with the increasingly accelerated process of modernization, Gupen Song, like other folk art forms, has faced a survival crisis and needs to be valued and protected.
