Tongshan Mountain Drum
Tongshan Mountain Drum in Tongshan County, Xianning: It is said that it originated from the Tongshan Mountain Drum in the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. It is a traditional folk art that farmers use to accompany and sing while working in the wild. The shape of the mountain drum is like the small hall drum used in opera, but it is slightly smaller in size and shape. Iron rings are installed on both sides of the drum body, and it is tied with a cowhide belt or ribbon, which is convenient for the drummer to hang it on his chest. When singing, the drummer holds a stick in his right hand to beat the drum, and holds the bottom of the drum with his left hand, and uses his fingers to adjust different timbres. An excellent drummer can generally play dozens of drum beats with different rhythms and emotions. The sound of the mountain drum is loud and crisp, and it can be heard from miles away. Tongshan Mountain Drum is mainly divided into two categories: "Digging Mountain Drum" and "Planting Field Drum". In addition to the mountain drum carried by the drummer, this kind of "mountain gong and drum" also hangs a gong on his waist, holding a bell in his left hand to beat the gong, and holding a stick in his right hand to beat the drum. The tunes of Shan Gu are closely integrated with the local language, and have a strong rhythm. In addition, the melody is high-pitched and passionate, simple and warm, and rich in local color. It is an art form that enlivens the labor scene. In the 1988 Hubei Provincial Folk Music and Dance Television Competition, the program "Happy Farming" Shan Gu adapted by Tongshan County won the Silver Cup Award.
