During the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, Enshi Lantern Opera was introduced to Enshi from Chongqing. It has a history of more than 200 years and is now distributed in more than 20 counties and cities including Enshi, Lichuan, Jianshi, Xuanen, Laifeng, Xianfeng and eastern Chongqing. Why can Enshi Lantern Opera remain fresh over time? Enshi Lantern Opera is a single-volume excerpt opera, and the main roles are Xiaosheng, Xiaodan and clown. The main characteristics of Lantern Opera are "three smalls", namely "small plots, small characters and small troupes". Most of the actors in Lantern Opera are farmers, and most of the stories they perform are stories of ordinary people. The plots are also anecdotes in daily life, and basically do not involve emperors, generals, talented men and beautiful women, and historical events. They can be called "Xia Li Ba Ren". Not only that, Enshi Lantern Opera has no strict requirements on costumes, props, and stages. It can be performed anywhere in the fields, halls and courtyards. "Twisting, strutting, jumping, laughing, laughing, and making noises", Meng Yongxiang summarized the performance form of Lantern Opera in 6 words. Lantern opera is easy to learn, sing and spread. Even if you have a low level of education, you can sing some operas. The earliest lantern opera troupe in Baiyangping was called "Jiang Cuopiao Lantern Opera Troupe". The owner "Jiang Cuopiao" was from Dongxiacao Village, Baiyangping Town. There are currently nine generations of descendants, with a history of more than 100 years. The customs and folkways displayed by Enshi Lantern Opera have important reference value in folklore research. As of now, Enshi Lantern Opera has preserved 112 repertoires, and the scripts mainly come from four sources: traditional repertoires such as "Wu Dou's New Year Greetings" and "Sheep Herding in the Snowy Mountains"; repertoires performed in conjunction with Sichuan Opera and Southern Opera such as "Xue Rengui Fights Motianling"; repertoires transplanted and adapted from Sichuan Opera and Southern Opera such as "Shan Bo Visits Friends"; repertoires compiled, adapted and created after liberation, such as "Novel Media" and "Lan Suan". In 2007, "Enshi Lantern Opera" was announced by the provincial government as the first batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage lists; in 2008, it was announced by the State Council as the first batch of national intangible cultural heritage extension project lists. Today, Enshi Lantern Opera has become a well-known local opera in Hubei, and is well-known throughout the province and even the country.
