Legend of Fang Xiaoru

Zhejiang
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Fang Xiaoru was a famous writer, thinker and politician in the Ming Dynasty. When Zhu Di, the Emperor of the Ming Dynasty, seized the throne, he asked Fang Xiaoru to draft an imperial edict to cover up his tracks. Fang Xiaoru not only said nothing good, but also wrote the four words "Yan thief usurped the throne" on the imperial edict. Zhu Di ordered him to delete it, but he said "No!" Zhu Di threatened him: "If you don't delete it, I will kill all nine of your clans!" Fang Xiaoru replied: "Why not kill all ten clans!" As a result, the nine clans of the Ninghai Fang family, together with 873 of Fang Xiaoru's students and friends, were all executed by slow slicing. This is a great spirit of devoting oneself on the altar of personal belief, and it is a solemn stroke in the history of Chinese literature. Later generations admired Fang Xiaoru's talent and personality, and many legends about Fang Xiaoru were circulated among the people; in Fang Xiaoru's hometown, Goucheng, many relics are still preserved. Literary works include "Collection of Righteousness in Goucheng", "Critical Biography of Fang Xiaoru" (Song Lian), "Research on Fang Xiaoru, a Great Confucian in the Early Ming Dynasty", "Continuation of Collection of Righteousness in Goucheng", "Collection of Outer Collection of Xunzhai", documentary "Fang Xiaoru", Kunqu opera "Jiang Ya Fang Xiaoru", "Wu Zhong's Draft Edict", Sichuan opera "Yipin Zhong", Yue opera "Fang Xiaoru", Pingdiao "Qian Kun Zheng Qi", Jingyun Dagu "Fang Xiaoru Scolds the Palace", folk tales "Fang Xiaoru Plays with Big-Headed Ghost", "Fang Xiaoru's Textbook", "Fang Xiaoru's Seniority", "Fang Xiaoru Writes Plaques", etc. The relics include "Wooden Archway", "Yijing", and "Bi Shi Lane". The relevant departments of the county plan to further excavate, collect, and organize the legends of Fang Xiaoru's life, establish and improve archives, and protect them.
